Books, conversation and learning to handle feelings gave Sparkies Nursery School its clearest character in June 2023. At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall, with effective safeguarding and a curriculum responsive to individual needs, including those of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
Based at St. Lukes Community Hall in London, Sparkies accepts children aged 16 to 60 months and has capacity for 36 children. It operates during term time, making the school-holiday calendar an important consideration for working families.
In June 2023, stories were woven into activities as well as dedicated story times. Conversation accompanied play: younger children practised new words, while older children asked questions and explained their ideas. Staff also used words and phrases from children's home languages, giving children another way to participate.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, the June 2023 examples included painting and handling snack-time tongs to practise hand control, alongside climbing and running for coordination. Children used large blocks to recreate the Eiffel Tower, comparing heights and discussing how to make their structures stable. Mathematical ideas had a practical purpose.
In June 2023, counting helped children judge whether their block columns would stand, while discussion of length and width helped them work out how pieces could connect. These were opportunities to use mathematical vocabulary while solving a problem in play. Painting and tongs offered a different kind of practice: small movements that helped prepare children's hands for writing. Running, chasing and climbing exercised larger movements and balance. Together, these examples show how the framework's learning and development requirements translated into everyday activities at that inspection, rather than a day made up only of adult-led group sessions.
There were weaknesses too. In June 2023, outdoor activities sometimes lacked enough adult involvement and challenge to sustain learning. During singing and circle time, crowded groups made concentration harder. These were the two priorities for improvement.
At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that staff understood individual needs, supported children's emotional understanding and exchanged information with parents daily. That combination connected learning with relationships, rather than treating care as a separate part of the day.
In June 2023, children chose where to play and staff responded to their requests. Adults helped them recognise their own feelings and those of friends, providing practical support for playing together. Staff also worked with other settings to maintain continuity as children moved to their next stage of learning.
Observation informed planning in June 2023: practitioners assessed what children could already do and used their interests to shape activities. For parents, that is an important distinction between simply providing things to play with and choosing experiences that build on a child's development. Language support also had different starting points. Younger children received help to move beyond individual words, while older children had opportunities to tell stories and discuss their learning.
The June 2023 safeguarding findings covered staff suitability checks, updated child-protection knowledge and clear routes for raising concerns about children or colleagues. Adults were positioned to supervise children, and garden climbing apparatus gave children opportunities to practise judging risks with support. These details explain the effective judgement at that visit; they remain a dated assessment.
Management also supported teaching in June 2023 through opportunities for staff development and procedures for reviewing its quality. This matters alongside the two improvement priorities: attention to teaching included both staff learning and scrutiny of children's experiences.
Sparkies is at St. Lukes Community Hall, 192 Ramsden Road, London, SW12 8RQ. Opening hours are 8.30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, during term time; it closes for school holidays.
In June 2023, the nursery offered funded places for three- and four-year-olds. That is a dated account of participation, rather than a promise of a funded place for an individual child.
Sparkies suits families seeking term-time childcare. Language, books and emotional development were strengths identified in June 2023. Its June 2023 strengths were concrete: conversation during play, practical mathematical exploration and daily communication with parents. Outdoor challenge and the organisation of group activities deserve attention when assessing how the nursery works today.
