A Discovery Room for sensory exploration and daily walks beside the canal give Merchant Square a character that extends beyond its playrooms. This purpose-built Paddington nursery combines space for movement and quieter exploration with outings into the surrounding residential and leisure area. The neighbourhood becomes part of the nursery day.
At its September 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective, with learning organised around individual children's interests. One improvement point matters for families: information about children's behaviour support needs did not consistently reach every practitioner, including cover staff.
Partou Merchant Square accepts children aged 3–60 months and has 69 places in total. Full days, mornings and afternoons provide different attendance options, alongside term-time and year-round childcare.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: in daily life, that means learning through play, conversation, movement and relationships. Alongside this, Partou's group-wide child-led approach gives children choices about their activities, with practitioners supporting their exploration. The practical distinction is between children choosing an activity and adults deciding every next step for them.
In September 2025, activities connected books with experiences outside. Children gathered recognisable leaves during a canal walk after sharing a story about autumn, then discussed differences in size and colour. That gives a familiar book a second life beyond reading time, with objects children can examine and talk about themselves.
Language also accompanied outings. During that September visit, practitioners used the nursery rhyme Five Little Ducks beside the canal, linking words and song to children's surroundings. Indoors, repeated stories gave younger children opportunities to become familiar with what happened next. Conversation continued through the day, including with children learning English as an additional language.
Discovery Room brings together sensory exploration, physical activity and quieter reflection. Its value is the combination: children can explore through movement, while the room also makes space for a calmer experience. The wider indoor setting uses neutral decoration and resources intended to encourage imaginative play.
Outside, growing patches sit alongside climbing frames and mud kitchens. These provide different ways to use the garden, from active movement to handling materials and exploring growing things. Daily walks take children around Merchant Square, beside the canal and to the local post office, giving them contact with their immediate community.
In September 2025, physical activities included riding tricycles and using large tyres and climbing equipment. Smaller movements had their place too: children squeezed and rolled dough they had helped make, and transferred water using pipettes. The day included opportunities for both whole-body activity and precise hand movements, rather than relying on one kind of physical play.
Relationships begin with getting to know the child and family. In September 2025, settling arrangements helped practitioners establish individual needs, while daily exchanges and updates kept parents informed about care and development. Staff and families also worked together on toilet training, allowing routines at home and nursery to support one another.
A small bookcase and a cosy area were used that September to help children regain calm when returning to nursery. Practitioners also explained transitions during the day so children knew what would happen next. These are concrete ways to support a child who needs reassurance or finds a change of activity difficult.
The September 2025 behaviour concern qualifies that picture. Occasionally, practitioners lacked the individual information needed to tailor their response, and this included cover staff. For a child whose behaviour support depends on familiar strategies, consistent handovers are a meaningful consideration, even where settling and relationships work well.
Seasonal food is cooked on site, and menus change on a three-to-four-week cycle. Allergy procedures and alternative meals form part of the food arrangements, with families sharing dietary requirements during registration.
The address is 13 Harbet Rd, Paddington, London W2 1AJ. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with three timed booking patterns: a full day from 8am to 6pm, a morning from 8am to 1pm, or an afternoon from 1pm to 6pm. The full day is labelled as two sessions, so parents can distinguish a complete day from either shorter booking.
Attendance can run through the year or during term time. The nursery closes for bank holidays and between Christmas and New Year; charges nevertheless apply over 52 weeks, including bank holidays. This matters when comparing the cost of the attendance pattern with the days actually used.
Funded childcare is offered through Westminster Local Authority, with entitlements of 15 or 30 hours a week according to eligibility. Term-time funding runs over 38 weeks; for year-round attendance it is spread over 51 weeks, giving 11.17 or 22.35 funded hours each week. Stretched funding therefore changes the weekly allocation rather than providing the term-time total every week of the year.
Care, food and consumables are separate charges. Meals, snacks and drinks have their own fee, while the consumables charge covers items including nappies, wipes and sun cream; both categories are charged separately during funded sessions too. Funding applies to care, so these costs remain part of the family budget.
Registration involves either a non-refundable registration fee or a deposit to reserve the place, depending on eligibility under the terms. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Merchant Square suits families seeking either shorter morning or afternoon care, or full-day attendance, with term-time and year-round options. Its clearest attractions are tangible: Discovery Room, a garden with growing and active play, and daily exploration of the surrounding neighbourhood. The September 2025 Good judgement supports consideration, while the handover improvement point gives families a precise care question to pursue. Separately charged food and consumables also need to sit alongside funded hours in the budget.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 15 September 2025 inspection and found safeguarding effective. The improvement point concerned making sure all practitioners, including cover staff, understood children's individual behaviour support needs.
