An enclosed garden for younger children and a covered outdoor area for preschoolers give Acorn Day Nursery, Hedgerows a clear emphasis: time outside belongs in the nursery day. Based beside the Hedgerows family centre in Netherfield, this Milton Keynes setting combines outdoor exploration with practical support for children and their families.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 1 August 2024 inspection. The strongest examples were personal rather than showy: home visits for new children, resources for reading together at home and help connecting families with local services. There were also two clear improvement priorities, concerning consistent communication support and the coaching staff received.
There are 38 places in total, with an accepted age range of 5 to 59 months. Full-time and part-time care are offered, giving families different ways to use the setting rather than a single attendance pattern.
Acorns and Squirrels accommodates up to 14 children aged four months to two years, with a main play space, sleeping area, changing facilities and enclosed garden access. For parents comparing baby provision, that cap describes the room, separate from whole-setting capacity and children attending across different days.
Oaks accommodates up to 24 children aged three and four, with a large garden, a covered outdoor space and a quiet room that can also be used for sleep. The shelter matters to the outdoor emphasis, providing somewhere to play when the weather changes. Both room descriptions give rest a place alongside activity; neither requires children to spend the whole day in one busy play space.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, that means learning through play and everyday experiences, including conversation, stories, creative activity and growing independence. Preschool children also take part in regular Forest School sessions, an approach based on repeated learning experiences in a natural environment. Regular outings and trips extend the day beyond the nursery, although no particular destination should be assumed.
In August 2024, the curriculum brought together knowledge of children's families, their community and the natural world. Children searched for insects, tended plants and used recycled boxes in imaginative play. These were concrete ways to investigate living things and turn ordinary materials into something of their own.
Creative work had room for persistence too. During August 2024, children spent time cutting ribbon for crowns, practising hand control while carrying an idea through. Stories, songs and conversations supplied opportunities to hear and use language. Basic signs had also been introduced, but their use was inconsistent, so children did not all receive the same help expressing what they wanted or needed.
Every child has a key person, giving the family an identified practitioner who can build familiarity with the child. In August 2024, settling support included home visits, allowing staff to build relationships and learn about children's home lives. That connection gives settling a personal starting point rather than treating each child in the same way.
At its August 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities included through staff's understanding of their individual needs, with additional funding used for resources and extra attendance where beneficial. These are dated findings about the care delivered at that point, rather than a guarantee about any individual child's support package.
Practical independence was visible in August 2024 through places where children could get water and wipe their noses themselves. Staff also shared dental-health information with parents. Small routines such as these let children practise doing things for themselves within the nursery day.
Family support reached beyond conversations about development. In August 2024, staff helped families connect with food-bank and children's-centre services, while a lending library and bags of stories encouraged reading together at home. A nursery recipe collection offered another link between nursery routines and family life. The useful thread is continuity: familiar stories and meals could travel home with the child.
Staff development had a clear limitation. In August 2024, practitioners accessed training internally and online, but coaching and mentoring needed further development to improve teaching and interactions. Training opportunities and effective support in daily practice are different things; the improvement priority concerned the latter.
The address is Netherfield Playzone, Langland Road, Netherfield, Milton Keynes, MK6 4NP. Opening hours run from 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays, with both full-time and part-time care offered across the year. These are opening hours, rather than separate morning or afternoon session times.
Hedgerows follows Acorn's group-wide closure calendar: bank holidays, the Christmas-to-New-Year period and four staff-training days each year. Those breaks matter when planning childcare alongside work, even for families using an otherwise year-round arrangement. Enquiries and visits can be arranged directly by telephone on 01908 394996.
Fully funded places are offered for eligible two-, three- and four-year-olds, alongside paid childcare. Eligibility remains a condition of the funded offer. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, so the cost of a family's chosen attendance pattern can be considered together with its funded hours.
Acorn Catering prepares meals afresh each day at its Shenley Church End hub kitchen and delivers them to Hedgerows. Menus use locally and ethically sourced ingredients and are planned for nutritional balance, making food preparation a shared catering arrangement rather than cooking within this branch.
Hedgerows suits families considering either full-time or part-time care who value outdoor play and a personal relationship with a key person. The enclosed younger children's garden, covered preschool outdoor area and regular Forest School sessions give that emphasis substance. Its August 2024 Good judgement is balanced by specific work needed on communication support and staff coaching. Those priorities deserve attention alongside the practical family support that gives this nursery its character.
