Guisborough Montessori Nursery

At a Glance

Montessori exploration, a garden used daily and access to a college sports hall give Guisborough Montessori Nursery a clear character. Montessori here encourages children to explore their world and develop skills in an environment prepared for learning and play. The setting combines that exploration with a structured daily routine.

At its March 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The practical appeal is its combination of independent exploration and physical activity, rather than the Montessori name alone: children have opportunities to make things, move, cook and practise everyday tasks.

Based at the Pursglove Centre on Church Walk in Guisborough, the nursery accepts children aged 3 to 59 months. It operates Monday to Friday for 50 weeks of the year.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, bringing play, communication and physical development into the nursery day. Montessori sits alongside this framework, encouraging children to explore and develop skills through an environment prepared for play and learning.

The daily routine combines free choice with activities led by adults, including cookery and circle time. Scissors, dough and mark-making materials give children practical ways to exercise their hands. Exploration and adult guidance both have a place in the day.

In March 2022, learning plans drew on children's interests and what they already understood. Songs, rhymes and stories supported communication, while outdoor shape activities brought mathematical language into play. These examples show how learning could happen through familiar experiences rather than a separate lesson.

For babies, the March 2022 account described tummy time with objects positioned to encourage movement towards them, alongside staff talking and singing. These examples covered both movement and early communication. This is a useful distinction for parents weighing how an approach associated with independent choice works for the youngest children.

Outdoor and Community Life

Garden access is part of each day, with free movement between indoor and outdoor activity. Digging and lifting give children opportunities to use larger movements, while dough, scissors and mark making exercise their hands. The garden is a working part of the learning environment.

Prior Pursglove College adds another physical resource. Through the nursery's partnership with the college, children regularly use its sports hall for running, balancing, jumping and climbing. Musical movement activities also create opportunities to stretch and move to music. Together, the garden and sports hall give physical development space beyond tabletop activities.

Care and Support

In March 2022, extended settling arrangements helped children become familiar with nursery routines and develop attachments to their key person. Parents shared information about home routines, interests and achievements, and spoke regularly with that practitioner. The value lay in continuity: knowledge of home life informed the child's experience at nursery.

At the March 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding arrangements and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities effective, with children making good progress from their starting points. At that time, the special educational needs coordinator used support strategies and drew on outside agencies, including speech and language services and the local SEND team. These are dated findings about how support operated then.

Everyday independence also had a practical place in March 2022: children helped prepare lunches and practised handling utensils, while staff discussed eating well and oral health. Today, the daily routine includes toothbrushing opportunities, and sociable mealtimes give children practice in conversation, using cutlery and serving their own food.

Staff receive first aid and safeguarding training, with food hygiene training where relevant. Families are asked to keep children at home when they show symptoms of illness; children who become unwell may need collecting promptly. That policy has a direct implication for working parents: backup arrangements may be needed during the day.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The nursery operates from Monday to Friday across 50 weeks of the year. Bookings are organised a month ahead, with the nursery asking for them by the 12th of each month. This advance planning matters for families whose work commitments change: the booking deadline belongs in the household calendar.

The day combines child-chosen and adult-initiated activities, with lunch followed by afternoon activity and a later snack. A predictable sequence gives children familiar reference points while retaining room for spontaneous play.

The address is Pursglove Centre, Church Walk, Guisborough, TS14 6BU, within the grounds of Prior Pursglove College. Enquiries can be made on 01287 280244 or by email to guisboroughmontessori@atomix.ac.uk.

Funding and Paid Extras

Payment can be made monthly in advance, with online payment options and tax-free systems. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. In March 2022, the setting provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds; that is a dated participation statement.

Families can send a packed lunch or pay separately for a home-cooked lunch with two courses, using a three-week menu that repeats twice. Snacks carry a voluntary contribution, so lunch and snack arrangements should be considered separately when planning costs.

Things to Consider

  • Opening time. The home page gives a 7.30am start, while the nursery and parent-information pages give 7am; all give a 6pm finish. Confirm the opening time before arranging an early work start.
  • Language teaching. In March 2022, staff sometimes moved questions on before children had enough thinking time, and did not consistently demonstrate new vocabulary. During a visit, ask how practitioners now allow children to develop an answer and extend their language.
  • Booking and settling. Bookings are requested a month ahead, preferably by the 12th, while extended settling was a strength in March 2022. Discuss how the settling plan would fit your child's routines and your intended attendance.

The Verdict

Guisborough Montessori Nursery suits families who value children choosing activities, learning practical skills and having daily outdoor access. Cookery, the garden and regular use of the college sports hall make that offer tangible. The advance monthly booking arrangement also suits parents able to plan attendance ahead.

The March 2022 Good judgement provides a useful dated assessment, with inconsistent language modelling and insufficient thinking time the identified teaching weaknesses. For a family considering this nursery, the strongest decision is whether its balance of independent activity, adult guidance and structured routines matches their child.
