Tiny Tots Day Nursery

At a Glance

Mud Kitchen play and I Can initiatives, which support communication through spaces indoors and outside, give Tiny Tots Day Nursery in Manvers a practical, play-led character. Children can explore materials, build, talk and make marks. Participation matters more here than the finished creation.

The nursery has capacity for 72 children, accepting ages from three months to five years. At its May 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective, although staff needed to strengthen group rules and give children more demanding opportunities to think for themselves. That judgement belongs to 2022; later safety action also matters to the decision.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: play supports communication, physical development, relationships and the beginnings of literacy and mathematics. Tiny Tots makes those areas tangible through construction, stories, movement and practical tasks.

I Can initiatives support language development through communication-friendly spaces inside and outdoors. Puppets accompany rhymes and stories, while mark-making extends from early experiments with fingers to older children attempting letters and their names. These experiences give children different ways to express themselves, with speaking and early writing woven into play.

Mathematics has an everyday purpose. Sorting toys during tidying, matching shapes and fitting construction pieces together bring size, shape and counting into activities children already understand. Creative work includes model-making, music and drama, with the child's involvement taking precedence over the end product.

Outdoor and Community Life

Mud Kitchen, outdoor sand play and construction provide contrasting materials to explore. Local walks also form part of learning about the world, with children encouraged to gather things that interest them. The emphasis connects activity outside with curiosity about plants, animals and weather.

In May 2022, babies explored sand using hands and feet while staff linked words to their actions; tapping wood against metal offered another way to investigate sound. Children practised balance on tyres and steps. These examples show how physical exploration and language were combined at that time.

The same month's improvement priorities deserve attention. Group activities were sometimes interrupted because children received too few reminders about shared rules, and some adult questions gave children too little scope to reason independently. Interesting materials alone do not settle those teaching questions.

Care and Support

Key persons are part of the nursery's partnership with families. That gives parents a defined relationship through which to discuss their child, alongside the nursery's emphasis on independence and learning to cooperate with others.

In May 2022, key persons shared children's next learning steps with colleagues, so support could continue when the usual adult was absent. Parents received developmental updates and ideas for activities at home. Staff also discussed children's medical and care requirements with families, making individual needs part of those conversations.

Communication extended beyond spoken language that month. Children used songs and actions to include children who were not communicating through words, and talked about their families and friends. Preparation for the next stage of education included confidence in starting conversations, rather than being limited to early writing. These are useful examples of the relationships and communication parents should look for in practice.

Practical Information

Tiny Tots is at Unit 1/A, Concept Court, Manvers, Rotherham, S63 5BD. It opens Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, throughout the year apart from bank holidays. Enquiries can be made by telephone or through enquiries@tinytotsrotherham.co.uk.

In May 2022, funded early education was provided for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated account of participation, rather than a promise about a family's present entitlement or attendance arrangement.

On 13 January 2025, Ofsted served a Welfare Requirements Notice covering risk management, suitable and hygienic premises, emergency safety including unobstructed fire doors, and staff supervision and training. A further visit on 23 January 2025 recorded decisive steps towards addressing the actions, including additional staff training on risks, health and hygiene. This is the latest published position; it does not explicitly confirm that every action was met.

Things to Consider

  • Safety follow-through. The January 2025 notice covered several aspects of everyday safety. Ask to see how the actions, including fire-door access and regular environmental checks, are now implemented and monitored.
  • Thinking and group play. May 2022 improvement priorities concerned children's reasoning and shared activity rules. During a visit, ask how practitioners now extend children's answers and help a group stay engaged.
  • Attendance and costs. The year-round opening window runs from 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays. Ask for a written quotation setting out the booking pattern, current funding arrangements and who pays for meals and consumables.

The Verdict

Tiny Tots merits consideration for families seeking play-led childcare in Manvers, with practical mathematics, communication-friendly spaces and outdoor materials giving substance to its approach. Its weekday, year-round opening window is useful for families planning regular care.

The decision should also give proper weight to the January 2025 safety notice and its qualified follow-up. The older Good judgement offers context, but the nursery's present handling of those actions is central to choosing it.
