Arc Pre-School

At a Glance

Gardening space beside the Caterpillars Room gives Arc Pre-School a practical thread running from outdoor exploration to growing fruit and vegetables. This term-time setting at Britwell Youth & Community Project in Slough combines child-initiated play with activities directed by staff, adjusting teaching to the interests and needs of individual children or groups.

Arc has capacity for 25 children, with a current age range of 18 to 60 months. At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good overall and found safeguarding effective. That is a dated judgement, rather than a description of every aspect of care today.

Full-time and part-time attendance are offered, alongside extended hours arranged in writing. The practical appeal is a term-time routine with different attendance options; the educational character comes from the balance between children's own ideas and adult guidance.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Ladybugs Room emphasises early interaction, movement and communication through play, giving the youngest children opportunities to practise being alongside others. Caterpillars Room serves children aged two to three, combining language and physical development with friendship-building, toilet-training support and its own outdoor area connected to the gardening space. Butterflies Room takes children from three years old, using their questions and interests to shape play while developing independence, confidence and consideration for others ahead of Reception.

These are different stages of the nursery day, rather than interchangeable room names. In Caterpillars, the connection between the room, changing facilities and outdoor space links emerging self-care with exploration. In Butterflies, learning to wait, tolerate differences and treat others kindly sits alongside preparation for the next educational step.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework provides the educational foundation: children develop communication, movement and relationships alongside early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding their surroundings. Arc combines adult direction with play initiated by children, using observation to decide what to introduce next.

The practical methods are concrete. Staff add words and commentary to play, demonstrate how to do something and support exchanges between children. Reading materials include posters and labels as well as books, while creative experiences include movement, role-play and music. This gives learning several routes into the day, rather than making it depend on one kind of activity.

At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the curriculum broad and children's progress assessments accurate, but identified opportunities to deepen thinking through better language modelling and questioning. The distinction matters: choosing an activity that interests a child and extending what the child learns from it are separate tasks.

Outdoor and Community Life

The gardening area allows children to plant, dig and grow produce throughout the year. Caterpillars have their own outdoor area beside the building, linked to the gardening area.

In June 2022, outdoor experiences included water play, planting and conversations about honeybees. Children practised putting on boots and aprons themselves, and staff taught safe ways to handle gardening tools. These examples connect exploration with everyday independence: taking part also involved preparing themselves and learning how to use equipment safely.

Care and Support

Toilet training is built into the Caterpillars Room's support, with toilet and nappy-changing facilities intended to ease the process for children and adults. Butterflies staff model considerate behaviour and help children understand the expectations of sharing a space with others. Those everyday interactions are part of preparation for Reception, alongside growing independence.

For children with SEND, staff adapt activities to individual needs and work with families. Their experience includes supporting children with hearing difficulties, delayed development, autism and motor impairment; wheelchair access is provided. These are useful mechanisms to discuss against a child's particular needs, rather than a blanket promise that every support requirement will be met in the same way.

In June 2022, staff helped children identify feelings, practise manners and become familiar with routines. Children also brushed their teeth regularly and explored healthy eating, including trying fruit at snack time. Parent communication at that time included sharing information about children's development and the support they received. The emphasis was on linking daily care, emotional understanding and learning, rather than treating them as separate parts of attendance.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Arc operates during term time and offers full-time and part-time places. Opening hours are 8am to 4pm from Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 2.30pm on Friday. Extended hours before and after core hours require a written arrangement.

Changes to attendance days or sessions depend on availability and require a written request with the reason and one week's notice; the nursery responds in writing to confirm a change. Leaving requires a full term's notice, including for funded children, and the terms say that lost funding must be reimbursed. This makes the termly commitment an important part of comparing attendance options.

Funding and Paid Extras

Arc offers 15 funded hours for eligible two-year-olds and 30 funded hours for eligible three- and four-year-olds, over 38 weeks and subject to place availability. Funding should therefore be considered alongside the nursery's term-time calendar and termly notice commitment.

Things to Consider

  • Attendance commitment. Full-time, part-time and prearranged extended hours offer different ways to attend, but changes require written notice and depend on availability. During a visit, discuss how your intended pattern would work within the termly commitment.
  • Language development. In June 2022, stronger language modelling and questioning were improvement priorities, alongside evaluating the effect of staff training. Ask for examples of how staff now extend children's conversations and assess changes in practice.
  • Individual support. Caterpillars combines toilet-training support with outdoor exploration, while staff adapt activities for children with SEND. Use a visit to discuss how support would fit your child's daily routine.
  • Food and everyday supplies. Ask how meals, snacks and non-food consumables would be arranged and charged for your chosen attendance pattern, including funded hours.

The Verdict

Arc suits families seeking term-time provision with either full-time or part-time attendance, and those who can arrange extended hours in advance. Its clearest practical strengths are the room-specific stages of learning, Caterpillars' outdoor connection and teaching that responds to children's interests.

The June 2022 Good judgement provides a useful inspection reference. The decision should also weigh the full-term notice requirement and the specific work needed to extend language and evaluate staff training. For a family whose calendar fits, the combination of growing, play and increasing independence gives Arc a recognisable educational character.
