Monksfield Way Children's Centre Early Years Service

At a Glance

Paint mixed on a cloth attached to the garden fence, herbs crushed with a pestle and mortar, and obstacle courses for climbing: practical exploration shaped the nursery day in November 2024. Children had things to investigate and ideas to discuss.

At its 5 November 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated Monksfield Way Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received strong support. The setting is based at Claycots Primary School in Slough and has capacity for 40 children aged 3 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care, with play helping children develop communication, physical skills and understanding. In November 2024, activities connected those aims to children's interests: younger children experimented with vegetables in water, while older children explored how paints changed when mixed.

Outside, balancing and climbing on obstacle courses gave active children opportunities to practise movement. Sand play also prompted children to invent shared games. These examples show a day with space for children to make choices, rather than activities directed entirely by adults.

Teaching had weaknesses too. In November 2024, staff sometimes missed opportunities to take children's self-directed play further, and teaching of early mathematical ideas was inconsistent. Those limitations matter alongside the appealing practical activities.

Care and Support

In November 2024, key staff built relationships with children and families, offering comfort when new children felt anxious. Picture prompts helped children understand the next part of the routine, including handwashing before eating. This gave children with delayed speech or English as an additional language another way to understand what was happening.

Support included referrals to paediatricians and personalised intervention plans informed by professional advice. Targeted work addressed concentration, speaking and listening. Parents received photographs, videos and home learning packs, connecting activities at nursery with learning at home.

Conversations also grew out of ordinary tasks: children discussed their preferences while helping the chef prepare peppers for lunch. Families were invited to explain religious celebrations, and children tasted foods associated with different cultures.

Things to Consider

  • Extending play. Staff sometimes missed teaching opportunities during children's own games in November 2024. On a visit, ask how practitioners now recognise when to join in and develop an idea.
  • Early mathematics. Teaching mathematical concepts was inconsistent in November 2024. Ask for examples of how counting, quantities and other early mathematical ideas now enter everyday play.
  • Planning attendance. The opening window runs from 8am to 6pm. Before joining, ask which booking pattern and funded-hours arrangement would fit your child's attendance, including the treatment of meals and consumables.

The Verdict

For families who value practical play, communication support and close contact with key staff, Monksfield Way merits consideration. Its November 2024 provision combined hands-on exploration with individual support and useful links to home learning. The questions to pursue are concrete: how practitioners extend children's play and how consistently they teach early mathematics.
