A reading shed, books borrowed for home and songs built around Goldilocks give First Class Nursery School, Wirral a recognisable early-years character. Those details come from April 2023, when stories, conversation and practical independence shaped the children's day. The emphasis was on small steps: joining a song, pouring a drink and learning to take turns.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 27 April 2023 and judged safeguarding effective. Two improvements accompanied that judgement: rebuilding parent and community participation, and giving practitioners more targeted coaching. These matter alongside the strengths, especially for families who want to participate in nursery life.
The Storeton Road setting accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has 79 places in total. Attendance is tailored to individual families, rather than presented as one fixed booking pattern.
Tiny Tots Room, Tots Room and Toddler Room are named within the staff structure, alongside Early Years. They give families useful reference points when discussing their child's time at nursery, but the important distinction is between a room's name and the experiences within it.
In April 2023, younger children explored materials close to the floor while adults joined their play, made eye contact and supplied simple words. Babies had tummy time, while children beginning to walk used furniture and walkers with adult guidance. The activities connected movement and communication with what each child was ready to attempt.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, the April 2023 examples included learning through sensory play, stories, movement and everyday tasks. Activities were adjusted as children's needs changed, including the resources and surroundings used by very young babies.
Goldilocks supplied a shared story for action songs in April 2023. Children remembered the different bowl sizes and listened as adults altered the words. This brought language, size and attentive listening into an activity children could join together, rather than treating each as a separate exercise.
Reading also had a physical home. In April 2023, children gathered for stories in the reading shed and borrowed books to enjoy with their families. The combination linked shared reading at nursery with time spent over a book at home.
Older children practised everyday independence that month: using a water cooler, finding their wellingtons for garden play and helping themselves to food. These were manageable responsibilities with an immediate purpose. Preparing for the next activity became part of the learning.
Settling is shaped around the incoming family, with sessions offered without charge until the child feels comfortable. That gives the adjustment its own time, rather than asking every child to settle to the same timetable. The support includes the wider family as well as the child.
In April 2023, key people used children's interests and needs to guide activities, and parents received detailed accounts of their child's day. Those conversations gave families something concrete to build on at home. However, opportunities for parents and visitors to participate in nursery life had yet to be restarted.
At the April 2023 inspection, Ofsted found good progress and very good support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including a coordinator who obtained external help and practitioners who learnt physiotherapy and speech-therapy strategies from visiting professionals. The useful detail is the mechanism: specialist advice was carried into everyday routines.
A Safeguarding Lead role sits within the current staff structure. In April 2023, practitioners undertook safeguarding training, monitored attendance and checked the rooms and garden for hazards; staff caring for the youngest babies also understood safe formula preparation. These are dated examples of the arrangements behind the safeguarding judgement, rather than a description of today's staffing deployment.
The address is 114-116 Storeton Road, Birkenhead, CH42 8NA. Opening hours are 8am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year except public holidays. For working families, the closing time is the practical boundary around which collection needs to fit.
Attendance is bespoke, with charges calculated around each family's arrangement. The contact form accepts questions and appointment requests, and telephone enquiries can be made on 0151 201 2239. Current prices come in a personalised written quotation from the nursery.
Funded provision includes 15-hour places for children aged 2, 3 and 4, plus extended 30-hour places for eligible families with children aged 3 and 4. Eligibility remains a condition of the extended offer; it is not a promise that every family qualifies. Personalised attendance and the funded offer need to be considered together when choosing a pattern that fits family life.
First Class Nursery School, Wirral suits families seeking individually arranged attendance and a settling process that gives their child time to become comfortable. Its April 2023 examples make the educational emphasis tangible: stories shared in a reading shed, communication through play and independence practised in ordinary routines.
The Good judgement sits alongside clear development points. Families who value active participation should give the nursery's present approach to parent involvement particular attention, while the weekday closing time needs to work with their collection plans.
