Rhymes, stories and practical number play give Warren Farm's nursery its early learning character. This is the nursery within Warren Farm Primary School in Kingstanding, Birmingham, with provision for children aged three and four. Its place within a primary school gives the experience a school setting, while the learning starts with activities suited to young children.
At the inspection on 12 and 13 September 2023, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision.
Morning and afternoon sessions provide the day's basic shape. Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), the activities bring together making, movement, language and discovery. Nursery children enjoyed hearing stories and rhymes in September 2023: an introduction to reading built around listening and enjoyment.
Numicon gives early years mathematics a concrete starting point. Children use play to explore patterns and tackle problems, with learning extending to shape, direction and weight. The emphasis is on working with ideas practically. Creative learning takes a similarly active form: children experiment with colour and express ideas through role play, dance and art. They also make things from their imagination or by following instructions, giving them different ways to approach a task.
Songs and nursery rhymes feature in music, alongside opportunities to play instruments. Computers and cameras introduce children to digital equipment and its uses. Physical development includes bike riding and pencil use, linking larger movements with the smaller movements needed for drawing and writing.
Exploration extends to the natural world and weather. Children ask questions about how things work and use their own experiences to suggest explanations. Conversations about family celebrations and traditions bring familiar experiences into learning, while Discovery RE supports exploration of differences and similarities between people.
Curriculum detail. In September 2023, some early years learning areas still needed clearer specification of what children should learn. Completing that work was an improvement priority, a qualification to keep alongside the Good judgement.
A school SENCO provides a contact for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Families also have access to a Family Worker through Early Help. The school describes this as support when a difficulty first develops, with the aim of addressing needs before they grow. That gives parents a route to discuss family concerns alongside their child's learning.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, even though both concern Warren Farm.
The morning session runs from 08:30 to 11:30; the afternoon runs from 12:30 to 15:30. These are distinct session times to factor into family routines.
