Schools in Spennymoor

A former colliery town shaped by the Durham coalfield, Spennymoor holds around 22,000 residents across a civil parish that reaches south of the River Wear in County Durham, seven miles from the city of Durham itself. Tudhoe Colliery and Tudhoe extend the spread southward.

Kirk Merrington, the elevated village on the western fringe of the parish, has long drawn families competing for primary places within County Durham's allocation system. Whitworth, positioned to the east, is a further school-competitive corner of the parish. Rail connections from Durham reach Newcastle in around fifteen minutes on the East Coast Main Line.
