England's oldest new town in the north, Newton Aycliffe grew from a post-war planning initiative under the New Towns Act of 1946 to house around 26,000 residents across County Durham's central belt.
Woodham and Aycliffe Village draw families competing for primary school places, with the latter an older settlement predating the planned town by centuries and forming part of the civil parish of Great Aycliffe. Aycliffe Business Park anchors the town's economy. Byerley Park and Greenfield extend the residential spread to the east, where newer housing estates have built out the town's footprint. Newton Aycliffe station links to Darlington, five miles to the south, where the Bishop Auckland branch connects to the wider north-east rail network.
