Virtue, Learning and Manners: the three words Brentwood School drew from its 1622 statutes still frame how it describes its purpose, helping every child, in its own phrase, "become the best version of themselves". Set on a 75-acre site in the middle of Brentwood town and founded in 1557 by Sir Antony Browne, this is a mixed, Church of England independent school for ages 3 to 19. It takes pupils from a Foundation Year through the prep school, into the senior school and a large sixth form, with day places alongside full, weekly and flexi boarding. Around 1,878 pupils and students sit on the whole-school roll across all phases. Michael Bond has been Head since September 2019. At both GCSE and A-level the school ranks first in Brentwood and inside the top 10% of schools in England.

Brentwood is old, large and unmistakably purposeful. It has taught in the same town since the reign of Mary Tudor, and its founding values of virtue, learning and manners are not decorative heritage: they are printed into the way the school talks about behaviour, teaching and character today. Staff describe their shared approach as the Brentwood Way, a common language for how lessons are planned and how pupils are expected to treat one another.

The scale is part of the character. This is one institution running from a Foundation Year for three-year-olds up to Upper Sixth, so a family can, in principle, arrive at nursery age and leave at 18 having never changed schools. The youngest children start in the early years, where the day is built around curiosity, play and the first academic foundations, led by early-years practitioners rather than dropped straight into formal lessons. The prep school, founded in 1892, has its own buildings and rhythm, including Middleton Hall and the Higgs Building, while the senior school and sixth form spread across a campus of named halls and centres, from the Bean Academic Centre to the Sixth Form Centre and the Hardy Amies Design Centre. A working Chapel anchors the Christian foundation, and the Willis Museum, housed in an old stable block, keeps the archives of nearly five centuries.

That long history has produced a recognisable roll of former pupils, from the author Douglas Adams and broadcaster Noel Edmonds to the comedian Griff Rhys Jones and the footballer Frank Lampard. The most recent ISI inspection, carried out in December 2025, found a positive and inclusive culture built on those stated values, with pupils showing respect, responsibility and a mature sense of social awareness. It is a school that prizes structure and courtesy, and families who want that framework tend to value it highly.

Published rankings for Brentwood begin at the exam phases: the prep school follows the Early Years and primary curriculum but is not separately ranked against England at Key Stage 2, so the clearest measures of academic standing come at GCSE and A-level.

At GCSE the senior school performs well above the England average. In the most recent results, 37% of entries were graded 9 or 8, the top band that replaced the old A*, and 57% reached grade 7 or above, with 20% at grade 7 (the old A) alone. That places Brentwood 322nd of 3,895 schools in England for GCSE results, the top 8.3% (ranked against all schools in England with published GCSE results, state and independent). The sixth form is stronger still on breadth of grade. Close to half of all A-level entries, about 48%, were graded A or A*, against an England average of roughly 24%, and 83% reached A*-B, comfortably ahead of the England average of about 47%. Those results rank the sixth form 257th of 2,562 schools in England for A-level results, the top 10.0% (ranked against all schools in England with published A-level results, state and independent). The blended FindMySchool overall ranking is 258th of 2,561, and again first in the local area. Brentwood is unusual in offering three post-16 routes side by side: A-levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma and BTEC Extended Diplomas in sport and business. The IB cohort has posted an average of 38 points, and in a recent year three students achieved the maximum 45, evidence that the top end of the sixth form is genuinely stretched rather than coasting.

Teaching at Brentwood is planned and subject-secure. Lessons are built around the Brentwood Way, and teaching is purposeful and well planned, resting on consistently secure subject knowledge. In the early years, provision promotes curiosity and the first academic foundations through a play-based approach, and the prep school then leans hard into specialist provision: pupils are taught by subject specialists in science, ICT, languages, music, art, drama and outdoor learning well before they reach the senior school, which builds confidence and a broad base before GCSE choices narrow the field.

Progress is tracked through formal systems, and pupils who fall behind are given timely, personalised support rather than being left to drift. Learning support is a genuine resource here, not an afterthought: the senior school and prep school each have their own head of learning support, and the school employs two on-staff educational psychologists who carry out dyslexia screening and diagnosis. Provision extends to a wide span of needs, from dyslexia and dyspraxia to autism, ADHD and speech and language difficulties, and pupils learning English as an additional language are identified early through standardised testing.

The one clear caveat comes from the same inspection. In some lessons, opportunities for pupils to develop self-motivation, intellectual curiosity and independent thinking were not always fully realised, and building that habit consistently was the single next step inspectors identified. It is a refinement rather than a warning, but a fair one for parents to weigh.

Progression through Brentwood is the norm rather than a fresh hurdle at each phase. At the end of Year 6 prep pupils move up into the senior school, and most Year 11 students continue into the sixth form, which nonetheless sets its own entry requirements and recruits externally at 16 through consultation interviews. In practice a child can travel from Foundation Year to Upper Sixth without a single change of school, then leave with a strong set of destinations.

At 18, those destinations are strong and well spread. In a recent admissions cycle 25 students applied to Oxford or Cambridge, winning three places, all of them at Cambridge. Beyond Oxbridge, leavers reach a range of selective universities including the London School of Economics, Imperial College London, UCL, Bristol, Exeter, Nottingham, Bath, York and Liverpool, a spread that reflects strength across humanities, sciences and social sciences rather than a single specialism.

The wider picture from the most recent leaving cohort of 186 students is that around 73% progressed to university, with a further 6% taking up apprenticeships and 11% moving directly into employment. Degree apprenticeships and direct entry to work sit alongside the traditional university route rather than being treated as second best, which suits a school that runs vocational BTEC pathways next to A-levels and the IB. Impartial, thorough careers education from an early stage helps students weigh those options seriously, and financial literacy is built into the curriculum so leavers understand the economics of the choices they make.

Brentwood admits at four main points: a Foundation Year at 3, Key Stage 2 entry at 7, the largest external intake at 11, and sixth-form entry at 16. The youngest children join after a family interview and observation, and entry at 7 is assessed through English and maths tasks plus collaborative activities. Entry at 11 uses GL Assessment's online Adaptive Admissions Tests in mathematics and English, together with an English writing task completed at school and an individual meeting. Selection is academic rather than faith-based. Although Brentwood is Church of England by foundation and Christian in ethos, it describes itself as a modern, inclusive community, and families of all faiths and none are welcome. The Christian character shapes the calendar and the Chapel rather than gatekeeping the intake.

The registration deadline for most entry points is 1 November of the year before entry, with a registration fee of £125 including VAT. Bursary applications at 11 and 16 sit on a similar early-November timetable, so families seeking financial support should plan well ahead. Pastoral care is organised around the same three values that run through everything else, and behaviour is positive and inclusive, with pupils encouraged towards respect, responsibility and cultural awareness. A well-structured PSHE and relationships curriculum covers healthy relationships, personal safety and moral awareness, and careers education is impartial and thorough from an early stage.

Safeguarding was judged effective, with a strong safeguarding culture, rigorous recruitment checks, comprehensive staff training and swift, well-recorded responses to concerns. Governors provide close oversight, including a named governor responsible for safeguarding. For day-to-day wellbeing there is a dedicated Wellbeing Garden on site, and boarders in particular benefit from warm, supportive relationships with residential staff. The overall impression is of a school where structure and care reinforce each other rather than pull apart.

Co-curricular life at Brentwood is genuinely expansive, and it is one of the school's defining strengths. Four pillars stand out.

Music is the headline. Brentwood is one of only 14 All-Steinway Schools in the country, giving young musicians access to premium instruments, and it runs a Specialist Music Programme in partnership with the Guildhall School of Music that provides high-level coaching in performance and chamber music. The prep school even hosts Junior Guildhall Kindergarten and String Training programmes, so serious musical training can begin very young. Ensembles range from Big Band and orchestras to jazz groups, a Junior Choir and a Spikes Jazz Academy that draws players from across Essex, and rehearsal is supported by a Music Technology Suite and seven practice rooms. The school also stages the Brentwood International Music Competition for exceptional musicians aged 13 to 17, whose top prize, the Head's Award, is a full boarding bursary valued at up to £60,000 a year. Performances have a home in the 400-seat Wessex Auditorium, with the prep school using its own Prep Hall, seating up to 480.

Sport is served by facilities most schools can only envy: a 12-court arena in Courage Hall, a 25m indoor pool with a separate learner pool, four glass-backed squash courts, all-weather astroturf, a running track, a cricket pavilion, an indoor rifle range and a purpose-built fencing salle. Talented athletes can join the Elite Player Pathway from Year 8 to Upper Sixth, and specialist provision includes a Tennis Academy, a Football Academy, a Chess Academy, a Fencing Club and an Equestrian Team. An inclusive PE programme runs alongside the elite routes, so participation is not reserved for the most able.

Uniformed and outdoor pursuits are a real strand rather than a token. The Combined Cadet Force runs Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force sections, and pupils can take the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the school's own Great Outdoors programme. In the prep school, a Forest School operates in Bayman Wood alongside a Bushcraft Club and a Young Engineers Club, and activities are organised through the ACES framework of arts, community, enrichment and sport.

Drama and creative enrichment round out the picture, with LAMDA speech and drama qualifications offered to all ages, dedicated drama studios and three dance studios, plus a Musical Theatre Club and Stage Crazy Theatre School lower down the school. Older students can take Model United Nations and Voluntary Service Activity into the wider community. This is not a school where co-curricular means an after-school club or two; it is woven into the week.

For 2026-27, day fees run from £22,239 a year for Reception to Year 2 and £23,076 for Years 3 to 6, up to £30,204 a year for day students from Year 7 through the Upper Sixth. The financial-aid programme is substantial. Around 100 students hold means-tested bursaries, roughly 9% of the roll, and 70 of those have fully funded places; the school spends about £2.5 million a year on bursaries, which can cover up to 100% of tuition, and the average award is worth 84% of fees. Bursaries are offered at 11 and 16. Separately, merit scholarships are awarded, worth a standard 10% of fees and up to 20% in exceptional cases, for academic strength and for talent in art, chess, dance, drama, music and sport. Scholarships are not means-tested; bursaries depend on family income. The distinction matters when planning: a scholarship recognises talent, a bursary answers affordability, and a family can hold both.

Boarding is a growing part of the school. Brentwood opened a new boarding house in the autumn of 2025, with 122 single ensuite bedrooms divided into separate girls' and boys' sections around shared central facilities. Places come in three shapes: full boarding, weekly boarding, and a flexi option of two or three consecutive nights for students aged 11 to 18, which lets day families ease into residential life. Flexi places are limited and all boarders are interviewed first.

The accommodation is well maintained and the boarding community secure and homely, with warm, supportive relationships between boarders and staff and all the required national minimum standards for boarding met. Suitable induction is provided for new boarders, along with proper arrangements for medical care, meals, laundry and contact with home. Brentwood sits in the town of Brentwood in Essex, well connected to east London and the M25. Cost is significant, but heavily offset for some. Day fees reach £30,204 a year and full boarding £58,464, a serious commitment. The counterweight is one of the larger bursary programmes in the sector, funding around 100 students and covering up to full fees, so families on lower incomes should apply rather than assume the school is out of reach.

A Christian foundation runs through school life. The Church of England character is genuine, with a Chapel and collective worship woven into the calendar. Admissions are inclusive and open to all faiths and none, but families who would prefer no religious dimension at all should factor that in.

Independent thinking is the school's own next step. All standards were met at the most recent inspection, but some lessons do not yet consistently build pupils' self-motivation and independent learning. It is a refinement of an already strong picture, worth asking about at an open event.

Scale suits some children more than others. With around 1,878 on the roll across ages 3 to 19, plus boarding, this is a large institution. Confident children thrive on the breadth; a few may prefer something smaller and quieter.

Brentwood School is an established, high-performing all-through school that does several things at once and does them well: top-10% results at both GCSE and A-level, a rare three-way post-16 choice of A-levels, the IB and BTEC, exceptional music and sport, and a boarding option refreshed by a new house in 2025. Its December 2025 inspection confirmed all standards met, effective safeguarding and a warm, values-led culture, with only the consistent development of independent thinking flagged as a next step. It is best suited to ambitious families, day or boarding, who want a single school to carry a child from nursery to university entrance with real strength in music, sport and the co-curricular alongside solid academics, and who value structure and a Christian ethos. The main caveats are cost, mitigated by an unusually deep bursary fund, and scale, which is a feature for most children and a consideration for a few. For the right family, the value on offer, academically and beyond, is considerable.
