Flint-fronted fishermen's cottages and Georgian merchant houses line the lanes of Deal's medieval core, where Middle Street became Kent's first conservation area in 1968. The town sits on the Kent coast eight miles north-east of Dover, anchored by Deal Castle, Henry VIII's artillery fort, and the sheltered anchorage in the Downs that made it one of England's busiest ports after its admission to the Cinque Ports in 1278. Around 20,000 people live here today.
Walmer extends the coastal residential strip to the south, while Kingsdown is among the most sought-after pockets for school catchments; Northbourne offers village living a few miles inland. Trains from Deal reach Dover Priory in under twenty minutes and Canterbury West in around thirty on the Marshlink line.
