Laid out to a Victorian street plan drawn by architect Henry Currey at the commission of landowner William Cavendish in the 1850s, Eastbourne grew from farmland into one of East Sussex's most distinctive seaside resorts, set immediately east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. The Victorian pier and seafront theatre remain defining features of the town. Old Town and Meads are the most sought-after pockets for school catchments, with Meads in particular drawing families competing for primary places along the residential streets behind the promenade. Southern services connect Eastbourne to Brighton along the East Coastway line in around forty minutes. Langney and Willingdon form the residential eastern edge. Around 101,000 people now live across the borough, up from 89,800 at the 2001 census.
