A compact Pennine mill town of around five thousand in the Holme Valley, Holmfirth lies at the southern edge of the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire. Stone-built terraces line the eastern Pennine slopes. The River Holme runs through the valley floor roughly six miles south of Huddersfield, and the town's Victorian character earned a second life as the backdrop for the BBC's Last of the Summer Wine between 1973 and 2010.
Families competing for primary places tend to concentrate in Brockholes and Thongsbridge, where the Penistone Line reaches Huddersfield in around fifteen minutes, while Netherthong and Hepworth extend the school-competitive belt across the valley's higher ground.
