Schools in North Shields

Preston and Chirton fill out the wider borough.

Named for the Middle English schele, the temporary fishing shelters that once lined the River Tyne’s northern bank, North Shields developed from a medieval fish quay into a port town of around 6,000 in the North Tyneside borough of Tyne and Wear. Tynemouth is among the most school-competitive pockets in the area for families seeking primary places, and Cullercoats, along the coast to the east, draws parents in similar numbers. New York forms part of the residential hinterland where families concentrate. Tyne and Wear Metro services connect the town to Newcastle Central in around twenty minutes.
