At a Glance

A forest classroom, mud kitchen and twice-weekly music lessons give GSAL Nursery a character of its own within a much larger school. Its dedicated area sits inside the Primary School, with classrooms and outdoor spaces designed for young children. This is mixed nursery provision for ages two to four. Children starting at two must reach their third birthday within that academic year.

The balance is between a smaller nursery community and contact with older pupils: sixth form students help in nursery classrooms. In the ISI inspection of 10 to 12 October 2023, children across the early years were making good progress and were ready for their next educational stage. That finding concerns early years provision, rather than a separate nursery grade.

The Nursery Day

The teaching day lasts from 9am to 3pm. Learning combines practical exploration with structured activities: the early years foundation stage (EYFS) brings together early communication, physical development and the beginnings of reading and mathematics. In October 2023, teaching linked phonics, literacy and maths with practical play, while adults helped children extend their vocabulary. For parents, this means play has a learning purpose as well as room for discovery.

Wooden blocks provide one concrete example. Children collaborated to build a tall house, practising communication alongside construction. Cutting out coloured hearts developed control with scissors; music also prompted movement. Teaching assistants supported learning, with planning shaped around individual children's needs.

Beyond the classroom, the forest classroom and mud kitchen give children places to explore the natural world. Outdoor equipment provides daily opportunities to balance and climb, while yoga adds another kind of movement. Indoors, furniture is sized for young children. Specialist music teaching takes place twice a week in the music room, and a weekly early years library visit combines stories with choosing and exploring books alongside a librarian.

Care and Support

Staffing ratios are one adult to five children in the two-to-three class and one to eight in the three-to-four class. Qualified early years teachers get to know children's interests as part of helping them settle. In October 2023, relationships with adults helped children feel secure, parents remained in regular contact with the early years team, and safeguarding procedures were rigorous.

Lunch takes place in the Primary School dining room for children aged two to seven, keeping this part of the day within a younger age group. The catering team prepares lunch suited to nursery children. Five qualified school nurses can assist with illness and family concerns about eating or sleeping; the primary school has its own medical room.

For children with additional needs, the application process asks families to identify SEND or English as an additional language. The individual needs team supports pupils within available resources, and admission depends on meeting assessment criteria and the school's ability to meet the child's needs. These conditions matter when considering whether the provision fits your child.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask admissions to confirm the progression requirements for current nursery children. For Reception applicants, the school publishes an online application route, accepting applications throughout the year subject to space. For September Reception entry, classroom assessments take place in January before entry.

Educational preparation is a separate matter. The early years work on language, practical cooperation and early literacy builds skills for the next stage; it should not be read as an admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

Attendance is during term time. Families choose five weekdays, Monday to Wednesday, or Monday to Wednesday plus either Thursday or Friday. The three-day pattern therefore fixes the beginning of the week rather than allowing any three days.

Early birds starts at 7.45am with primary teaching assistants and carries no extra charge. Owls extends care to 6pm for an additional charge, with indoor and outdoor activities. Children staying until 6pm receive a meal; those without a meal must leave by 5pm. Classroom drop-off is between 8.30am and 8.50am, with ordinary collection at 3pm.

Funding and extras. GSAL does not accept the Free Early Education Entitlement, and lunches sit outside nursery fees. Ask the school for current charges when planning the full cost of attendance.

Schoolblazer supplies uniform online; the PFA's 2kit shops sell second-hand items. For enquiries or a visit, contact Primary Admissions on 0113 519 7822 or admissions@gsal.org.uk. Stay and play mornings let parents and children try classroom activities and outdoor play together before choosing.
