Nursery at Stroud Green Primary School

Caterpillars, Cocoons and Butterflies give this nursery its shape: three teaching rooms for children aged one to four, with both shorter sessions and full-day childcare. The provision occupies a separate building on Stroud Green Primary School’s site, with its nursery contact address on Ennis Road.
Room sizes differ considerably. Caterpillars takes nine children per day aged one to two; Cocoons takes 16 aged two to three. Butterflies has 45 allocated places for three- and four-year-olds. These are room-specific figures, rather than a single daily attendance total. Moving between rooms depends on the individual child’s readiness, so birthdays alone do not determine the change.
Play shapes the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum combines activities chosen by children with learning guided by adults, using Development Matters. Its seven areas bring together early maths and literacy, movement, communication, emotional and social development, creative expression and discovering the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond counting or recognising sounds.
Named programmes add structure. Nursery maths uses NCETM Number block resources, while Little Wandle revised Letters and Sounds supports early sound awareness. Children explore noises from their surroundings, including animal sounds, through songs and games. Jigsaw provides the personal, social and health education programme, with teaching adapted to children’s age and stage.
Exploring the natural world also forms part of the nursery curriculum. Observation, conversation, stories and information books help children describe their surroundings; simple maps introduce another way to understand places. Early-years science combines adult-guided activities with independent exploration shaped by children’s interests. Repetitive songs and musical instruments bring music into the play provision. There is a physical outlet too: Friends of Stroud Green has helped fund a nursery swing set.
Settling requires time from parents as well as children. During the first five days, parents must remain available to help with the move from home to nursery, and nursery fees are waived for that initial period. Families should plan their work commitments around this expectation.
SEND support follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review: staff identify needs, agree support and revisit its effect. The team includes an EYFS and KS1 SENDCO who also teaches in nursery, and nursery staff have Wellcomm speech and language training. The SEND policy uses support from a team around each child and explicitly rules out full-time individual adult support, including for children with an EHCP. That is a material consideration for families discussing care arrangements.
For the Butterflies funded term-time day, lunch can be brought from home instead of taking the charged lunch option.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the local authority where they live, even if that authority differs from the school’s. The stated deadline of 15 January 2026 applied to September 2026 entry and is now past.
The admissions policy reviewed in September 2025 includes a conditional oversubscription priority for children eligible for pupil premium who attend an attached nursery. This is not blanket priority for nursery children. The admissions page gives a different summary of priorities, so families should check the applicable admission arrangements for their child’s entry year.
Transition support is a separate matter. The SEND policy provides staff handovers and opportunities to become familiar with the next classroom and its team. Information shared with another setting is agreed with parents and children.
Opening hours are 8am to 6pm across 48 weeks. Caterpillars and Cocoons full childcare places do not include half-days. Fee-paying contracts cover three, four or five days, with allocated weekdays fixed; extra days depend on staffing capacity and carry an additional charge.
Butterflies offers term-time funded days from 9.15am to 3.15pm for eligible children using 30 hours. Its 15-hour offer is five mornings, 8.30am to 11.30am, or five afternoons, 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Eligible two-year-olds can take Free-For-Twos places for two term-time days, 8.30am to 4pm.
All-year childcare stretches funding across 48 weeks: the 30-hour entitlement becomes 23.75 hours weekly, and Butterflies’ 15-hour entitlement becomes 11.87. Ask the school for current charges. No. A separate local-authority application is required. The September 2025 admissions policy includes conditional priority for pupil-premium-eligible children attending an attached nursery, rather than priority for every nursery child.
