Nursery at Granton Primary School

Colour mixing, imaginary cities and stories about the high street give Granton's nursery curriculum its character. This is the school's own nursery on Granton Road in Streatham, with learning organised within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Practical exploration is a recurring thread: children choose materials, make things and explain their ideas.
The EYFS brings together seven areas of development. Relationships, movement and communication form the foundations; early reading and writing, number, creative expression and discovering the world build on them. For parents, that means learning extends beyond letters and counting to how children express themselves, use tools and work alongside others.
The nursery's 2024–2025 topics included Traditional Tales, Space and On the Farm, alongside Ourselves, Growth & Change and In Our Community (on the high street). These connect familiar experiences with imaginative possibilities. Children can explore their own lives while also thinking about places and ideas beyond home.
Making is part of the learning. Children practise cutting paper with scissors, investigate how objects work and construct miniature worlds using blocks and construction kits. Choosing resources for an idea gives them a reason to plan and experiment. Art adds another route for expression: children explore textures, mix colours and represent feelings through pictures. The nursery curriculum also includes movement and construction activities both outdoors and inside the classroom.
An induction meeting with the Inclusion Team gives parents an opportunity to explain additional needs and raise concerns. Families are asked to bring contact details for professionals already involved with their child, helping staff organise suitable support as the child settles.
For SEND concerns, the class teacher is the first contact. Teachers work with the SENCo to plan adaptations and additional help; a Pupil Passport or Provision Plan can capture the next steps. Support plans are reviewed each term with families, so the response can change as staff learn more about the child.
Everyday communication has a practical route too. Parents can send messages through a home/school diary, checked each morning, or email admin1@grantonprimary.org.uk. That gives families a way to pass on information affecting the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the normal admissions route. Nursery applications go directly to Granton; Lambeth Council handles Reception admissions. Nursery attendance is not one of the priority criteria, and a sibling attending nursery does not count towards sibling priority.
For the past 2026/27 Reception intake, applications used eAdmissions, with a deadline of midnight on Thursday 15th January 2026. Families living outside Lambeth applied through their home borough. Current nursery parents can book help from the Pastoral Care team to complete the online form.
Transition support is a separate matter. Home visits and visits to the new classroom help children become familiar with the next stage; they do not confer an admissions advantage.
The nursery timetable places lunch between 11:00am and 12:00pm. Nursery timings can vary, with nursery staff confirming the applicable times. Collection for EYFS children is from the classroom, and parents must notify the school in writing if another adult will collect.
For nursery enquiries, contact admissions@grantonprimary.org.uk. Keep the two application processes separate when planning ahead: a nursery application to the school does not replace the later Reception application.
No. Reception requires a separate application, and nursery attendance does not confer priority.
The EYFS combines communication, relationships and physical development with literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. Nursery activities include construction, colour mixing and using scissors.
