Firefighter role play, traditional tales and discoveries outdoors give Kingswood’s nursery curriculum its character. This is the school’s own nursery provision on Gipsy Road, with learning organised around children’s growing independence, conversation and play.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than giving the nursery a separate rating.
Play is the main route into learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, relationships, movement, early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. At Kingswood, practical experiences and conversations connect those areas, with topics shaped around children’s interests and their next steps.
Know me to teach me begins with choosing play resources, exploring inside and outside, and learning routines with adult help. Children practise sharing turns and playing alongside peers. People who help us then introduces the work of family members and other adults through pretend doctors, nurses and firefighters. New vocabulary has an immediate purpose: children use it in their play.
Once upon a time links familiar tales with acting out stories, drawing and painting. During Our wonderful world, children examine animals, plants and objects they find, learning to notice details and ask questions. Outdoor exploration is part of the learning itself.
Early reading starts with listening and language. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised provides the phonics approach; nursery activities include poems, action rhymes, stories and oral blending, which means hearing sounds joined into words. Reading for pleasure has at least 15 minutes allocated daily across EYFS, including adults reading aloud. Classroom book corners give children a physical place to explore books. Weekly music lessons add another form of expression, with an early years specialist using singing and movement.
Settling is built into the nursery curriculum. Adults support children as they learn to separate from their main caregiver and form relationships with familiar members of staff. Independence develops gradually, alongside confidence with classroom routines. This makes learning to feel comfortable part of the programme rather than a hurdle children must clear first.
The SEND approach emphasises recognising needs early and involving families in support. Reach More Parents provides a separate channel for everyday information: parents receive an enrolment code to access information connected to their child.
Pabulum supplies school meals, using a menu cycle of three weeks that is revised twice yearly. Nursery meals are charged, with payments handled through ParentPay; ask the school for current charges. Packed lunches are also an option. Nuts, sweets, fizzy drinks and glass bottles are excluded, so lunch preparation needs to follow the school’s rules.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority, using the e-admissions portal, by the normal application deadline. Choosing this nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself; the later school application remains a separate step.
Nursery applications go through the school office. General enquiries can be made on 020 8670 3576 or sent to office@kingswoodprimary.co.uk.
The EYFS uniform combines a green polo shirt with a blue sweatshirt, grey trousers or a skirt, grey socks or tights, and black shoes rather than trainers. Logos are optional. Opportunities to obtain pre-loved uniform give families another way to assemble the required clothing.
