Nursery at Stockwell Primary School

At a Glance

Outdoor learning in all weathers gives Stockwell’s early years provision a practical character: wellies stay at school, and spare clothes are part of the kit. This is the nursery within Stockwell Primary School on Stockwell Road, alongside its pre-school provision for younger children. The school also provides for two-year-olds.

Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 21 and 22 September 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play and exploration shape nursery learning. The nursery’s end-of-year update describes children learning through new experiences, while its suggestions for continuing learning at home include drawing, counting, conversation and shared reading. Independence matters too: putting clothes on, handling cutlery and clearing things away connect learning with everyday life.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together here through exploration and practical experience. Outdoor learning extends across its learning areas, with children using the outside environment daily whatever the weather, as set out in a November 2022 letter. Waterproof clothing makes that approach workable through colder months.

Early mathematics has a specific inspection endorsement. In September 2022, children in early years, including the provision for two-year-olds, were establishing their grasp of basic mathematical facts. For parents, this gives a concrete example of purposeful learning within the early years day.

Care and Support

Starting nursery is staged. The school calendar includes Stay and Plays for nursery and pre-school, followed by staggered starts for children joining the nursery. These give families an introduction before the regular routine begins. The admissions policy also describes visits with parents before starting, allowing children to meet teaching and support staff.

For additional needs, the federation’s support route begins with the class teacher, with the relevant inclusion team member available for further concerns. Resources and teaching methods are adjusted to individual needs. Speech and language support can include assessment and language targets for children who meet the therapy service’s criteria, followed by weekly work with a trained staff member.

Physical access includes step-free entry to Stockwell’s main building and a lift serving its three floors. Medical needs are discussed with the school nurse, and care plans are shared with the adults supporting the child. These are school-wide arrangements relevant to planning a child’s support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The admissions policy, adopted in Spring 2022, gives no Reception priority for attending nursery. Families must make a separate school-place application directly to Lambeth through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.

Preparation for the move is a separate matter. The policy describes Reception teachers visiting children in their existing nursery where possible. The federation’s transition arrangements also include time with new staff and preparation for changes to rooms, routines and adults. For children with an EHCP, a move to a new educational phase includes a review with the SENCo and relevant professionals, plus handover arrangements.

Practical Information

The Spring 2022 admissions policy describes a 15-hour nursery offer and full-time places booked ahead with a top-up charge. It also describes 30 funded hours for families meeting its eligibility criteria, requiring an online eligibility code, and some free full-time places subject to specified care, professional-recommendation or family-circumstance criteria. Contact the school for current charges.

Enquiries go to the office on 020 7274 7687 or clericalofficer2@stockwell-pri.lambeth.sch.uk. School open mornings can be reserved using the attendance form; they run during term time and begin at 9:30am.

For outdoor learning, the November 2022 guidance asks families to supply labelled spare clothing, a waterproof coat, wellies, gloves and a warm hat. Collection also needs planning: the September 2022 guidance permits Foundation Stage children to leave with named adults or authorised siblings aged at least 14, subject to the school’s judgement. The guidance requires immediate written notification of collection changes. Parents must also set up a collection-change password by email and use it when communicating changes.
