Settled along the Fosse Way since Roman times, Shepton Mallet grew into a medieval market town where the wool trade and later brewing shaped a distinctive stone centre along the River Sheppey in Somerset. Evercreech and Upton Noble extend the agricultural parish further south.
With a population of around eleven thousand, the town and the village of Ditcheat to the south form a school-competitive corner of the county, drawing families to a small but varied set of state schools. Castle Cary station, eight miles to the south on the Great Western line, provides the nearest rail link, with Bath reachable in under an hour.
