Recorded beside the Roman Watling Street since Anglo-Saxon times, Sittingbourne rose to wider prominence after the death of Thomas Becket in 1170, when the town became a favoured stopping point for pilgrims crossing the Swale district of Kent. Around 54,000 people live across the town today.

The town's long industrial chapter in paper manufacturing and brick production still shapes its character, and Borden, to the south, is among Sittingbourne's most sought-after pockets for school catchments, drawing families who look for a quieter residential setting within easy reach of the town centre.
