Fortified in the sixteenth century to guard the River Medway, Sheerness grew from a military outpost into a port town on the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent. A Royal Navy dockyard operated here from 1669 until 1960.
Its closure shaped the present compact town centre, with Minster and Minster-on-Sea forming the island’s most sought-after stretch for school catchments. Around 13,000 residents share the Isle of Sheppey; the Port of Sheerness remains one of the UK’s leading car and fresh produce terminals, and a branch railway connects at Sittingbourne for services across the Kent network.
