At the May 2025 inspection, vegetable growing and experiments with water gave Skylarks Nursery children practical ways to learn. This is Skegness Infant Academy’s own nursery, on Cavendish Road in Skegness, with admission from age 3. Academy uniform is part of nursery life too, bringing a visible connection with the school from the start.
At the May 2025 inspection, children made a positive start in nursery, with routines introduced promptly and clear expectations for behaviour.
At the May 2025 inspection, nursery learning involved doing something with a purpose. Children planted vegetables and tried moving water using containers to irrigate them. The activity connected an everyday task with an idea about living things: plants depend on water. Containers and plants supplied the practical materials for discovery, rather than leaving the explanation abstract.
In May 2025, nursery activities encouraged children to investigate and learn. The planting example shows what that can mean for a young child: handling materials, trying a way to move water and connecting the result with what a plant needs. Alongside this exploration, staff established routines promptly and expected children to behave well. Curiosity and predictable expectations both had a place in the nursery experience.
For children who need additional help, the academy’s support structure includes a SENDCO, specialist teaching assistants, a pastoral lead and a Family Support Worker. The SENDCO holds the National SENDCO award. Training within the team includes autism and Theraplay, giving families specific areas of staff experience to draw on when discussing their child’s needs.
Support is tailored to the child. Academy resources include pencil grips and sloping boards, alongside ear defenders and busy boxes. These are concrete examples of aids that can be considered when learning or sensory needs require an adjustment; they are not a promise that every child will use the same equipment.
Children receiving special support have their progress monitored, their needs considered and their parents kept involved. Support may be needed briefly or over a longer period. The Family Support Worker can be reached through the school office, providing a route for families seeking extra help. Academy communications also reach parents by email or text, so routine updates can be received directly.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Lincolnshire County Council’s admissions process in the year before entry. Treat that application as its own task, even when your child already attends Skylarks.
The practical distinction matters: choosing nursery and applying for school are separate decisions. A familiar academy uniform does not replace the Reception application.
Full academy uniform is required for Skylarks children. It includes a white polo shirt with a purple academy sweatshirt or cardigan and grey trousers, skirt or pinafore options. Summer alternatives include grey shorts or a purple checked dress. Families can purchase uniform through Nationwide School Uniforms in Spilsby or order online.
Clothing also needs to suit the weather: a sun hat for summer, or a warm coat with winter accessories. That makes preparation for practical nursery activities part of the daily routine at home.
