Nursery at George Fentham Endowed School

At a Glance

Early reading gives this nursery its clearest character. At George Fentham Endowed School in Hampton-in-Arden, children begin their school experience in FS1, part of the Early Years team. The school’s Early Years Foundation Suite, opened in 2011, provides a named physical base for this stage of learning.

Ofsted graded early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery-specific findings give reading particular weight: children made a rapid start, laying foundations for their next stage.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. Nursery planning divides the year into six half-term overviews across seven learning areas. For parents, this means looking at learning across those areas rather than treating the nursery curriculum as a timetable of separate school subjects.

Floppy’s Phonics supplies the named approach to early reading. The nursery curriculum information describes a focus on Phase 1 and the beginnings of Phase 2. Reading materials from ORT connect with the phonics teaching, supporting understanding, conversation and listening as well as knowledge of sounds. Children also read for enjoyment and take part in guided reading. Books have more than one purpose here.

In January 2025, early years learning included ambitious vocabulary through work about castles and royal figures. Such topics give children words they can use to talk about ideas beyond familiar daily experiences. Adults also encouraged children to do things independently, with clear expectations for behaviour. Learning includes how to participate, as well as what to know.

Care and Support

Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) begins in early years. In January 2025, needs were identified effectively, children participated alongside their classmates, and additional help supported learning. Curriculum adjustments enabled children to work towards the same goals as their peers. For a family considering additional support, that places inclusion within everyday teaching.

A designated inclusion lead coordinates support, staffing and intervention timetables across the school. Fruit snacks are free for nursery children. Milk is also free, provided parents register with Cool Milk, so that registration is a practical step for families who want their child to receive it.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. For the September 2026 intake, the route was an online application to the family’s home council, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed; it belongs to that intake cycle.

Curriculum continuity is a separate matter. Half-term themes in Reception build on nursery themes, giving children connections with earlier learning. This supports the educational move between stages, but should not be read as an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

The nursery offers 15 funded hours each week over 38 weeks annually. Additional funded hours may be possible through BASE, the extended wraparound provision, subject to discussion directly with BASE. Families needing longer care should distinguish that arrangement from the nursery’s funded offer.

Parents can arrange a school-day visit by appointment. Nursery enquiries can go to the school office at office@george-fentham.solihull.sch.uk or 01675 442800. An appointment provides a direct way to consider the setting before applying.
