Super Antiquas Vias (Over ancient ways), runs the motto, and at St Peter's the ancient ways are not a figure of speech. The school traces its founding to AD 627, when St Paulinus established it alongside York Minster in the earliest years of English Christianity, which places it among the oldest schools in the world. Almost fourteen centuries on, it is a co-educational, Church of England, all-through day and boarding school of around 1,330 pupils and students, taking children from age 2 in the early years through to A-level at 18. GCSE results sit in the top 6.7% of schools in England, the sixth form clears the England A-level benchmark comfortably, and the school remains the choir school for York Minster. The school sits on a 50-acre riverside campus in Clifton, a short distance north of York city centre, where the grounds run down to the banks of the River Ouse. That setting shapes daily life: rowing has a natural home on the water, the historic Chapel stands at the school frontage, and the Alcuin Library, named for the eighth-century York scholar Charlemagne recruited to reform education across his empire, anchors a site that has grown around its oldest buildings rather than erasing them. Shepherd Hall and the Memorial Hall carry assemblies and performances, and the effect is calm and slightly collegiate.

St Peter's is currently organised as three linked sections on shared grounds: an early years phase from age 2, a junior school for pupils from 8, and a senior school and sixth form from 13. The institution is reorganising into a simpler two-school structure, a Junior School and a Senior School, with Jeremy Walker remaining Head Master of the whole of St Peter's while Tracey Allain leads the Senior School and Phil Hardy the Junior School. The ethos is scholarly and built on warm professional relationships between staff and pupils. Children are keen to learn, respond readily to feedback, and confidently redraft and edit their work, the kind of habit that signals a culture serious about academic craft rather than chasing marks. Behaviour is generally good, with pupils courteous and respectful, and the school earned all standards met at its most recent ISI inspection in February 2025.

The Church of England character is part of the school's fabric rather than an add-on: it was founded by the Church and has stood beside York Minster since the seventh century. That association is most visible in the Chapel and in the school's continuing role as choir school to the Minster, educating the cathedral's boy and girl choristers. As is typical of an Anglican foundation, the faith framing here is inclusive rather than exclusive. There is no faith test for entry, families of all faiths and none are welcomed, and Christian worship, chaplaincy, and the rhythms of the Christian calendar sit alongside a broad academic programme rather than dominating it. The seven core values the school names (Friendship, Trust, Wisdom, Compassion, Endurance, Humility, Hope) give it a clear identity without narrowing who can belong.

St Peter's performs strongly, with the clearest evidence in the senior school at GCSE. Of all grades awarded, 45.6% reached grades 9 to 8, the old A* band, with a further 22% at grade 7, so 67.6% of entries landed in the 9 to 7 range. That is a high-attaining profile by any measure.

Placed against every school in England with published GCSE results, state and independent, the senior school ranks 262nd of 3,895 for GCSE results, which puts it in the top 6.7% of schools in England and well above the England average. The youngest phases are harder to quantify in league-table terms, by design. As an independent school, the early years and junior sections do not sit the Key Stage 2 tests that state primaries take, so there is no primary ranking to report. The meaningful evidence at this age lies elsewhere: children in the early years develop secure early reading skills through a carefully planned and balanced curriculum, and pupils through the middle years show confident proficiency across a wide range of subjects. Parents weighing the prep phases should read the inspection findings and visit rather than look for a position the sector does not generate.

The sixth form is academically serious and the results bear it out. At A-level, 18.9% of entries were awarded A*, a further 29.9% an A, and 27.4% a B, so 76.2% of all grades fell in the A* to B range. Set against the England averages of 23.6% for A*-A and 47.2% for A*-B, St Peter's clears both benchmarks with room to spare: its A*-A share alone, at roughly 48.8%, is more than double the England figure.

Teaching is a clear strength, and the school invests in it deliberately. A Special Educational Needs Coordinator leads tiered provision, from extra tuition with subject teachers to one-to-one help, covering dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and autistic spectrum conditions, with exam access arrangements such as extra time or a reader for those who qualify. The 214 pupils identified with additional needs make good progress through that individual support, and the 83 pupils who speak English as an additional language receive targeted help that gets them confident in English quickly enough to access the full curriculum. In the early years, leaders provide a stimulating environment in which children learn through physical activity and outdoor pursuits, with reading carefully prioritised from the start.

Entry points follow the school's age structure. The main starting points are the early years and Reception from the youngest ages, the senior school at Year 7 and Year 9, and the sixth form at 16, with occasional places at other stages subject to availability. As an independent school, admission is by the school's own process rather than a Local Authority coordinated scheme, and there is no catchment distance and no faith test to satisfy: families apply directly.

The application deadline for Reception and for Year 7 or Year 9 entry is 31 December for the following September, and the school advises applying at least a year in advance. Entry into the senior school is by assessment: entrance tests in January include computer-based maths, English and reasoning papers, a creative writing exercise, a group task, and interviews, alongside a report from the child's current school. The school is explicit that pupils are not expected to prepare or revise, since the tests are designed to show how a child thinks rather than what they have been taught. The most recent ISI inspection gave it particular weight, finding that boarders' physical, emotional, and mental health is given the highest priority and that boarding staff take good care of pupils and respond to their needs. The accommodation is well maintained and risk-assessment procedures support pupil safety effectively. For families weighing boarding, the breadth of options is a real strength: a child can ease in through flexi or weekly boarding before committing to full boarding, which suits parents and children testing the water.

Pastoral care is a settled strength across the school. Pupils behave well and are courteous and respectful, they understand the rules well enough to keep themselves safe, and wellbeing is taken seriously day to day. Safeguarding is effective, delivered by a well-trained team that keeps staff current with statutory guidance.

The personal, social, health, and economic education programme is more substantial than its label suggests: pupils build financial literacy and learn about concepts such as profit and loss by planning real enterprise activities, which gives the curriculum a practical, outward-facing edge. A house system in both the junior and senior schools provides the everyday structure of belonging and pastoral contact that helps a large all-through school feel smaller to each child, backed by chaplaincy, mentoring, and mental health support.

Co-curricular life is one of the strongest reasons families choose St Peter's, and four pillars stand out.

Sport is serious and competitive. The riverside setting makes rowing the school’s signature sport, with its own Boathouse on the Ouse and a route into the GB U19 pathway for the strongest rowers. Cricket runs it close for pedigree, with a link to the Yorkshire Cricket Academy and England international Jonny Bairstow among the school's old boys, and there are talent pathways in hockey through England Hockey academy squads, in rugby through the Yorkshire Rugby Academy, and in judo through the Judo England Talent Development Squad. Music is exceptional in both scale and tradition. More than 300 individual instrumental and vocal lessons run each week, and the choral programme is anchored by the school's role as choir school to York Minster, where 16 girl and 16 boy choristers sing eight weekly services with the cathedral's adult singers, auditioning in Year 3 for entry the following year and receiving substantial funding toward fees. Ensembles run from the junior Sinfonia Orchestra and Jukebox Choir up to the senior Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, Wind Band, Clarinet Choir, barbershop groups, and string quartets, with a recording studio and computer-equipped teaching rooms to support it all. St Peter's is a full-fee independent school, and the published 2026-27 figures show the cost clearly. Day fees rise with age: Reception to Year 2 is £14,790 per year, Year 6 is £24,300, Years 7 and 8 are £25,560, Years 9 to 11 are £30,045, and the sixth form is £30,330. Boarding is charged in addition to the day fee, with current boarding rates available from the school. Scholarships are separate and merit-based. Music scholarships at 13 and 16 carry fee concessions of roughly 10 to 30% and cover tuition on up to three instruments, and include named awards such as the Edward Long Scholarship, the Waine Awards, and the Dean Milner-White Scholarship reserved for York Minster choristers. Bursary and scholarship deadlines fall earlier than general admissions, generally 1 December for Years 7 to 10 and 31 October for the sixth form. The clear pattern is that the most substantial help with fees is bursary-based, so the headline figures are not the whole story for families on modest incomes.

The school day for junior and senior pupils includes after-school care until 5.15pm, which is built into the fees and helps working families; early years and nursery hours are best confirmed with the school directly, as is the opening of The Rise Nursery in January 2027. Saturday commitments are typical of a boarding school of this kind, with weekend activity for boarders and fixtures across sports, so families should check the current weekly pattern for their child's section. Travel is well catered for. The campus sits off the A19 in Clifton, York Railway Station is around ten minutes on foot, there is a Park and Ride at Ingram House and a Marygate Park and Stride nearby for weekday drop-off, and a school bus route introduced in September 2025 runs from Wetherby through Boston Spa, Tadcaster, Rufforth, and Poppleton. Boarding makes the school accessible to families much further afield, including from overseas.

Cost is significant, but help is real. Senior day fees of around £30,000 a year, with boarding charged on top, put St Peter's out of reach for many families at the headline price. The mitigating factor is a genuine means-tested Help With Fees scheme covering entry at Year 7, Year 9, and the sixth form, worth up to 100% of fees, so families on modest incomes should apply rather than rule themselves out.

A structural change is under way. The school is reorganising from three sections into two, a Junior School and a Senior School, and a new early years building opens in January 2027. Neither is a problem in itself, but families entering in the next couple of years should ask how the transition will affect their child's section, classes, and staff.

The faith character is sincere, if inclusive. As a Church of England foundation with a working Chapel and a cathedral choral tradition, Christian worship and values are part of the everyday fabric. The school welcomes all faiths and none, but families who would prefer no religious framing at all should weigh that.

One narrow behaviour caveat. Conduct is generally praised, but the last inspection asked the school to make sure staff apply strategies consistently to prevent poor behaviour during unstructured break and lunch times. It is a specific, contained point rather than a broad concern.

St Peter's is a high-performing, all-through independent school where almost fourteen centuries of history sit comfortably alongside strong modern results: top-6.7% GCSE outcomes in England, an A-level profile well clear of the England A*-B benchmark, and 70% of leavers progressing to university. The co-curricular offer is genuinely distinctive, from rowing on the Ouse and a choral partnership with York Minster to the Dame Judi Dench Studio Theatre and a Combined Cadet Force, and the school is safe, scholarly, and well led, with pupils making good progress and boarders exceptionally well cared for. It is best suited to academically capable children whose families want breadth alongside results, including those drawn to rowing, choral music, or boarding, and who can meet the fees or qualify for a means-tested award. The main caveat is cost, softened by a real bursary route; the secondary one is the current restructuring, worth understanding before you commit.
