Archangels Montessori Nursery combines Montessori resources with a strong focus on practical independence. Here, Montessori means children handle purposeful resources, make choices and practise physical control rather than receiving a sequence of formal lessons. Ofsted judged it Good in December 2024, six months after an Inadequate judgement, and found that leaders had completed regular risk assessments and daily resource checks in response to the earlier inspection. That rapid improvement is central to the current picture.

Inspectors saw children who appeared comfortable with the setting’s daily rhythm. The inspection covered children aged three to four. For younger children, the relevant decision is whether the same approach is adapted convincingly to their care, movement and communication needs.

Montessori resources gave children chances to practise fine and gross motor skills. Physical practice joined conversation, memory and choice: adults offered engaging activities, followed children’s interests and used questions to develop thinking and language.

Specific examples make the approach clearer. Children were encouraged to remember earlier experiences rather than simply complete a new activity, so learning accumulated across the day. During circle time, children recalled earlier learning while discussing weather and seasons. They used songs to remember months and calendars, chose between singing and stories, and used smart speakers to select music or turn it off when they wanted to concentrate. Staff connected story events with learning at home and used thoughtful questions to extend language and reasoning. Children could also decide between shared experiences, which joined adult guidance to meaningful choice. This combination matters: independence here included knowing routines, selecting an activity and controlling distractions, not merely completing self-care tasks alone.

In December 2024, staff worked with parents and external agencies to assess starting points and plan next steps for children with SEND. Children also practised dressing, handwashing, serving snacks, listening and turn-taking. These everyday routines build the self-care and group skills needed before school. At the inspection, four qualified staff worked with 14 children on roll, all aged three to four. Those dated figures describe the group seen that day rather than a promise about current staffing, but they help explain the context for the inspector’s observations.

Ofsted found safeguarding effective in December 2024. Its supporting account described a team alert to welfare concerns and guided by children’s needs. Ofsted's improvement point was precise: staff should add more challenge during activities so children develop independence further. A useful test on a visit is how that challenge now changes for different ages and abilities. Recent staff training and regular supervision provide a mechanism for leaders to review such practice; continued evaluation of the overall provision remained the second improvement point.

• Challenge and independence. Ofsted asked staff to provide more challenge during activities. Ask for current examples showing how practitioners extend a child who has already mastered a task.
• Attendance and costs. Obtain the exact booking pattern and a written breakdown of funding, food, consumables and other charges before accepting a place.

Archangels Montessori Nursery is best suited to families attracted by Montessori resources, purposeful routines and an explicit emphasis on independence. The December 2024 Good judgement and completed safety actions show substantial recovery after the June inspection. Circle-time discussion, songs, stories and child-controlled music give the educational account useful texture.

The practical offer is much less visible. Families considering either full-day or half-day care need the nursery’s precise current offer, while parents of younger children need evidence from the room their child would use. The strongest case rests on the recent inspection; the visit should test how consistently that practice now reaches every age group.
