A detached house in North Greenford gives Discovery Nursery and Preschool, Greenford a recognisable setting; its strongest educational detail is the attention given to children's language. At its 10 January 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, praised its communication and language teaching, and found safeguarding effective. Songs, books and conversations gave children several ways to build their vocabulary.
Discovery accepts children from six months to five years and has 32 places in total. That is whole-nursery capacity, rather than the size of a child's daily group. Its address is 72 Currey Road, Greenford UB6 0BG.
Attendance choices include full-day packages and morning or afternoon patterns. The practical distinction is between attending for part of each weekday and spreading full days across a shorter working week.
In January 2022, books were an important part of children's play, while songs in small groups introduced new words. Practitioners also used questions suited to children's ages during activities. Learning was conversational: children had opportunities to listen, answer and express their own ideas, rather than simply complete an activity.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. In parent language, this connects play with developing communication, physical skills and an understanding of the world. Discovery's January 2022 activities included painting, exploring sand, learning about shapes and size, and practising counting. These examples show how early learning can sit within familiar play.
Outside, the January 2022 day included running, climbing and imaginative games. A mud kitchen gave children a place to invent pretend meals. Staff were also developing a woodland library at that time, bringing their work on books into a different play setting; this was a project in progress, rather than a completed facility.
There was an important limitation. In January 2022, observations of children's learning were accurate, but the information did not consistently shape the order and purpose of outdoor activities. Children who preferred learning outside were especially affected. Outdoor equipment and enthusiasm therefore need to be considered alongside how practitioners extend a child's learning through it.
Relationships were a strength of the January 2022 experience. Children formed bonds with adults and other children, and settled after periods away. Some showed care for friends during outdoor play. These are useful examples of the social side of nursery life, rather than a promise that every child's settling period will follow the same course.
At the January 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that staff supported children's independence and social confidence, including children learning English as an additional language, but asked for better outdoor learning plans and more help for children to work through disagreements themselves. The second point matters in everyday play: an adult supplying an answer too quickly can remove the child's opportunity to think through a solution.
In January 2022, children could hear and use their home languages during activities. Communication between parents and staff was also an established part of the nursery's work. For families using another language at home, the practical value lies in connecting nursery experiences with the language a child already understands.
Supervision in January 2022 involved staff communicating across indoor and outdoor spaces. Safeguarding procedures covered reporting concerns, handling allegations and restricting mobile-phone use. These are dated observations of staff practice, rather than an assurance about today's arrangements.
Greenford has a nursery chef responsible for children's meals. In January 2022, handwashing, physical activity and nutritious food also formed part of the daily health routines.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm. Full-day packages cover three, four or five days, while morning and afternoon packages each cover five sessions. The early start carries an additional charge. Families choosing between these patterns should distinguish the opening window from the hours attached to their individual booking.
Discovery operates across 49 weeks, with a break covering the final two weeks of August and five working days over Christmas. Public holidays, training days, polling days and group outings can also close the nursery. These closures matter for families whose work continues through nursery breaks.
Enquiries can be made through the contact form or by emailing admin@discoverynursery.org. Payment is monthly in advance by Direct Debit. Temporary absence or illness does not reduce the fee, and the closure terms also exclude refunds for the specified closure days.
The Currey Road setting is in a detached house, with Greenford station serving the Central line and Sudbury Hill station serving the Piccadilly line nearby. Those named connections are useful for families building nursery care into a rail commute.
Eligible children can access 15 hours or 30 hours of funded childcare, delivered across 38 weeks. Discovery's operating year is longer, so hours outside the funded entitlement remain privately payable; funding should not be treated as covering the entire nursery year.
Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. The fees page sets out the attendance packages, while the funded-hours charge question is a material point to settle before accepting terms.
A deposit applies to bookings beyond funded-entitlement-only sessions. It is credited against the final month's fees when the required notice has been given and no payments remain outstanding, but is not refundable if a family accepts a place and the child subsequently does not attend. Funded-entitlement-only sessions are exempt from the deposit.
Leaving requires a full month's written notice, delivered or emailed to the manager; notice during public holidays is not accepted. Without the required notice, a month's fees are charged. This makes the timing and form of a cancellation consequential.
Discovery suits families considering three-to-five-day full-day packages or five-session morning and afternoon patterns. Its detached-house setting and January 2022 examples of language teaching give it a clear character, while the dated outdoor-learning and conflict-resolution concerns deserve practical follow-up.
The decisive contractual issue is funded childcare: the meals and consumables charge must be settled in writing alongside the attendance pattern. Families also need a workable plan for the nursery's breaks and additional closure days.
