Bright Horizons Mount Vernon Day Nursery and Preschool

Two buildings, a curiosity classroom and a library give Mount Vernon a recognisable character: this is a nursery with separate spaces for different kinds of learning, rather than one room doing everything. Based at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, it accepts children from 3 months to 5 years and has 124 places in total. The whole-setting capacity should not be confused with the number of children sharing a room.

At its March 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and praised support for children with special educational needs and disabilities. That dated judgement needs to be read alongside the organisational safeguarding notice issued in June 2026, discussed below. The historical grade alone is not enough to make a decision today.

Rooms and Ages

The baby room combines play and exploration with space to relax, allowing activities to follow babies' developing interests. For toddlers, direct garden access and a substantial home corner connect imaginative play indoors with movement outside. Preschool children have breakout spaces and a curiosity classroom for learning led by their interests and preparation for school.

A separate dining area gives preschool activities somewhere to continue away from meals. The library adds another useful separation: a reading scheme gives books a planned place in learning, rather than leaving them solely to occasional story time. Gardens are divided by age group, so outdoor experiences can be organised around different stages of development.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets requirements for children's learning, development and care; in everyday terms, play, conversation and physical exploration contribute to learning together. Mount Vernon's reading scheme and curiosity classroom add concrete ways of organising that work. These are more useful details for parents than a curriculum label alone.

In March 2022, language teaching included adults repeating words during babies' play and introducing unfamiliar vocabulary during investigations with liquids and containers. Children also chose stories by voting, while the preschool children's committee selected Homes as a learning topic. Those examples put children's decisions alongside adult planning: interests helped shape what happened next.

Physical activity was equally tangible in March 2022. Babies practised crawling and using steps and a slide; older children used bikes, a balance beam and a mud kitchen. Scooping sand and handling small objects added practice with hand movements. The useful combination was movement on different scales, from balancing the body to controlling fingers.

A sensory room supports children with additional needs, while a parents' room provides somewhere for families to spend time during settling. A sleep room is also part of the facilities. These spaces give families concrete aspects of care to consider alongside the learning rooms.

In March 2022, staff used pictures and colours to help children identify feelings, and sensory exploration included smelling herbs and pressing them into play dough. A relaxation room provided another place for children to pause. Emotional awareness was therefore expressed through activities and spaces, rather than only through adult reassurance.

Communication with families had a practical rhythm in March 2022: staff made fortnightly calls to parents of their key children following parental feedback. Practitioners discussed children's learning and planned next steps. That example shows how feedback changed a routine, giving parents another opportunity to talk about their child's development beyond daily exchanges.

On 22 June 2026, Ofsted recorded significant organisational safeguarding weaknesses in some Bright Horizons settings and concluded that the provider had not shown it could make safeguarding consistently effective throughout its provision. The Welfare Requirements Notice required stronger organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight, handling of concerns and allegations, and training and supervision, with actions due by 1 August 2026. These organisational concerns were not identified at every individual setting. This is a group-level regulatory event associated with Mount Vernon's record, not a finding that every listed failing occurred at this nursery. Its latest published position is the June notice and its required actions.

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Attendance is priced by the number of weekdays booked, from one to five per week. The nursery operates across the year, with closures for an inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. Those closures matter when arranging cover around work.

Funded childcare uses 10-hour sessions beginning at opening time. Additional attendance outside that funded session is charged separately, and buying those extra hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. The funded session and the opening window are therefore different things for budgeting purposes.

Funding and Paid Extras

Stretched funding runs over 50 weeks. The funding arrangements cover 30-hour entitlements for eligible children from 9 months and at age 2, alongside 15-hour and 30-hour arrangements for ages 3 to 5. Eligibility remains a condition, rather than a promise of funding for every family. Private childcare is also offered, with payment collected monthly in advance by direct debit.

For private care, meals and snacks are included in the fee, with an onsite chef and freshly prepared food. Funded attendance has a separate food charge, which is non-mandatory and does not determine access to a funded place.

Nappies, wipes and formula for babies under 1 year are included in the private fee, subject to the nursery's stated exceptions to its inclusion list. Consumables associated with funded hours are supplied by the nursery. A registration charge applies; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

• June 2026 safeguarding action. The organisational notice required changes by 1 August 2026. Before choosing Mount Vernon, ask how those changes affect local reporting, supervision and the handling of concerns, and request the latest official outcome.
• Lunch transitions. In March 2022, some children became restless while waiting at tables or on the carpet for lunch. During a visit, ask how the current routine limits waiting between activities and meals.
• Settling and room arrangements. The parents' room and sensory room are relevant to a child who needs time or additional support to settle. Ask how settling, key-person contact and the child's room group would work together.
• Funded attendance and costs. Funding is stretched over 50 weeks, with 10-hour sessions and a non-mandatory food charge. Ask for a written breakdown matching the intended attendance, including the treatment of consumables and any nursery-specific exceptions to included essentials.

Mount Vernon merits consideration for families wanting attendance across the year on selected weekdays or throughout the working week. Its curiosity classroom, reading scheme, age-divided gardens and separate care spaces give parents specific features to assess. The March 2022 observations also provide useful examples of children's choices and language learning.

The decision needs a current safeguarding conversation. The June 2026 organisational notice is material to the choice. Families should weigh the practical fit and physical spaces alongside the latest official position on those required changes.
