A growing patch for babies, music with Jo Jingles and an Insect Motel give Little Tots Day Nursery a character that reaches beyond its rooms. Outdoor exploration sits alongside songs, sensory play and increasing independence. For parents, the useful combination is physical space to explore and a learning approach that responds to what catches a child's attention.
At its July 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, judging its education and support for children's progress highly and finding safeguarding effective. That judgement gives substance to the offer: the detailed examples included language woven into play, practical preparation for school and teaching adapted to individual children.
Little Tots takes children from 3 months to 60 months at Boundary Court in Sutton Coldfield. Its named rooms have their own arrangements, including gardens for Brilliant Babies, Terrific Two’s and Pre-School. The opening window runs from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The combination merits attention from families who want outdoor learning and everyday self-care to be part of childcare, rather than occasional additions.
Brilliant Babies accommodates up to 12 children from birth to two years, combining sensory experiences and movement with social and emotional development; its own garden includes a growing patch for fruit and vegetables.
Terrific Two’s accommodates up to 16 children aged two to three, with two indoor rooms, a garden containing a sandpit and gardening space, and low toilets and potties supporting the move towards independent toileting. The practical equipment matters. Children can practise a developing skill in surroundings arranged for their stage, while retaining access to outdoor play.
The Tweenie Room is for three- to four-year-olds. Pre-School Room accommodates up to 32 children, with activities emphasising independent thinking and solving problems, plus a large garden for confidence-building physical challenges.
EYFS sets the expectations for children's learning, development and care; here, the day connects that framework with language, movement, early literacy, mathematical ideas and creative play. Little Tots uses in-the-moment planning, meaning practitioners respond to children's interests as activities unfold. This gives an interested child a starting point for further conversation or exploration, rather than making paperwork the centre of the encounter.
The learning programme gives concrete examples of what sits alongside that framework. Jo Jingles provides music classes; drama is offered for toddlers and preschool children, sensory activities for babies, and sports coaching across the ages.
Shapes and spatial thinking are part of the mathematical emphasis, while language connects with understanding, reading and writing in preparation for Reception. Art and design are also used to explore ideas about the world.
In July 2025, babies explored floating bubbles while staff supplied words describing what they saw and did. Guitar-led singing and familiar songs gave children further opportunities to join in through actions and words. Preschool children practised writing their own names and recognising their friends' names. Those examples make the learning approach tangible: language came through shared experiences, while early writing had an immediate personal purpose.
Insect Motel is an outdoor resource for investigating insects and weather. Rain also becomes material for spontaneous exploration, so the outdoor spaces contribute to learning about changing conditions as well as active play. Alongside the gardens attached to rooms, this gives children reasons to look closely at their surroundings.
In July 2025, the garden included an obstacle course, tricycles and a net for throwing balls. Older children also had weekly sports-coach sessions. The experiences exercised different skills: balancing, coordinating movement and controlling a throw, with both shared games and individual challenges available.
Community experiences at that time included park outings and journeys by public transport to a care home, where children joined residents for crafts, yoga and singing. Preschool learning also explored a different country each month through its food, language and other features. The destinations and activities widened children's experience beyond the nursery itself, while the country theme gave staff several connected starting points for discussion.
A dedicated key person forms part of the care arrangements. For a family, that provides an identified practitioner around whom the relationship with the nursery can develop. Communication also uses the Famly app for development updates, photographs, messages and notifications, making everyday exchanges possible alongside conversations with staff.
Little Tots places less emphasis on taking photographs and recording observations during its in-the-moment planning, choosing more direct time with children instead. Parents who value frequent photographic updates should weigh that approach carefully. The intention is to give staff time to notice interests and adapt activities; the parent partnership still includes sharing children's learning and exchanging messages.
In July 2025, stay-and-play sessions brought parents into nursery activities, and a lending library let families borrow favourite books. Books also featured in daily experiences with puppets and other props. These arrangements linked nursery learning with home life in practical ways: parents could take part in play and continue a familiar reading experience away from the setting.
At the July 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that staff adapted teaching for children with SEND, used additional funding for resources and individual support, and worked with parents and other professionals on individual learning plans. This is useful detail about the support at that date, rather than a blanket promise about any child's future provision.
In July 2025, staff used Makaton to help younger children and children with SEND communicate. Practitioners also helped children understand emotions, the effect of their behaviour on others and ways to settle disagreements. Independence was built through ordinary routines: babies practised using spoons, toddlers used forks, and older children served food and handled a knife and fork.
Meals include snacks, breakfast, dinner and a cooked lunch, with religious, cultural and medical dietary needs accommodated. Children also practise making sandwiches, serving food with age-appropriate support and pouring drinks from porcelain jugs, bringing useful self-care skills into mealtimes.
The address is Unit 35-37, Boundary Court, Boundary Road, Sutton Coldfield, B74 2JR. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays. Little Tots operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. That closure pattern matters for families arranging cover around work commitments.
Enquiries can be made through the contact form or by telephone on 0121 352 0770. A tour-booking route is also provided.
Funded childcare is offered, including government two-year funding and 30-hour funding, with stretched funding also supported. These are funding options for eligible children, rather than a guarantee of entitlement for every family. Stretched delivery is relevant when comparing care across the year with a family's preferred attendance arrangement.
Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Little Tots suits families who want children's interests to shape learning, with music, movement and outdoor exploration woven into the offer. The gardens, growing patch and Insect Motel give that approach physical substance; practical routines also give independence a place in the day.
The July 2025 Outstanding judgement is a strong point in its favour, supported by concrete examples rather than a grade alone. Parents should weigh the emphasis on direct interaction against their preferences for documentation, and make the room progression and attendance arrangement central to their visit. The appeal is a connected nursery day, from sensory play to preparation for school.
