When the British Army established its permanent camp on Aldershot's heathland in 1854, the settlement transformed within decades from a Hampshire village into a Victorian garrison town. That identity has endured. Gun Hill and Central Aldershot fill out the residential offer, with a population of around 40,000 giving the town a self-contained character unusual for a north Hampshire settlement of its scale.
The town sits in the extreme north-east of Hampshire within the Rushmoor district, and South Western Railway trains connect Aldershot station to London Waterloo in around an hour. North Camp, straddling the border with Farnborough, is one of the most school-competitive corners of the area, drawing families competing for primary places, while North Town has long been a sought-after pocket for catchments closer to the centre.
