A small cathedral city of around 20,000 on the highest land in the Cambridgeshire Fens, Ely sits on a low ridge of Kimmeridge Clay that separated it from the surrounding marshland until systematic drainage began in the eighteenth century. The River Great Ouse still shapes the city's eastern edge. Ely itself draws families competing for school places from across the district, with Mepal to the west extending the school-competitive catchment into the surrounding farmland.
