A compact racing town of around 17,000 in West Suffolk, Newmarket is defined by its singular status as the headquarters of British thoroughbred racing, with two racecourses, some seventy training yards, and upwards of three thousand horses stabled within the town limits. Exning and Ditton Lodge fill the western edge.

Royal patronage reaching back to Charles II shaped its layout, leaving Newmarket Heath to the stables and the streets to commerce and residents. Moulton, on the Suffolk fringe, is among the most sought-after addresses for families competing for school places, with Newmarket's own central parishes forming a school-competitive core that draws parents from the surrounding villages. Trains on the Ipswich line reach Cambridge in around twenty minutes.
