Where the Greenwich Meridian runs through North Hertfordshire, Royston stands between Hertford to the south and Cambridge to the north-west. The town sits astride the historic Hertfordshire-Cambridgeshire boundary, which originally ran along the centre until the 1896 adjustment placed it wholly in Hertfordshire.
Royston's railway station connects the town to Cambridge in around twenty minutes via the Cambridge-London line. Royston is among the most sought-after pockets for families competing for secondary places, with Bassingbourn extending the school-competitive belt to the east. To the south and west lie villages including Melbourn and Thriplow. The parish has around 17,000 residents.
