Chartered as New Sarum in 1227 around the cathedral that rose at the confluence of the rivers Avon, Nadder and Bourne, Salisbury has held city status in Wiltshire for nearly eight centuries. The medieval cathedral still dominates the skyline. Around 42,000 people live across the city today, in a street plan that still echoes the original Norman grid.

Winterbourne Earls, just east of the city boundary, is among the most sought-after areas for primary catchments, while Salisbury's central postcodes draw families competing for places across all phases. Laverstock and Bishopdown extend the residential belt to the east and north, with Wilton sitting a short distance to the west. Salisbury railway station serves as an interchange between the West of England Line and the Wessex Main Line, with trains reaching Southampton in around thirty minutes.
