Where the River Anton winds through the eastern flank of Salisbury Plain, Andover has grown from a grain-milling and wool-market settlement into a Hampshire town of around 51,000 people. Its Georgian and Victorian core extends from the High Street down to the Anton's banks. Planned post-war growth extended the town north and west.
Weyhill, to the northwest, is among the most sought-after pockets for primary-school catchments, and Wherwell draws families competing for school places along the Test Valley corridor. Goodworth Clatford and Longparish extend the rural fringe to the south and east, with Winton the established residential quarter nearer the town centre. South Western Railway services from Andover station reach Winchester in around twenty minutes and Basingstoke in a similar time.
