Diddy Dinos Penge stands out for the quality of its adult-child interactions. It was judged Outstanding in January 2025, when children were seen to thrive, build secure attachments and behave exceptionally well. The setting serves children aged two to four and has capacity for 40 children.
The strongest thread is purposeful conversation. Practitioners use books, objects and careful questions to extend children's language and thinking, while mathematics is woven into stories, matching, number work and balancing activities. This is an ambitious, attentive form of sessional care rather than simple supervision.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. In daily practice, that means staff plan play and guided activities across communication, physical and personal development, literacy and early mathematics, then adjust the next step to what each child already understands. Here, communication, language and mathematics receive clear weight. In January 2025, staff adapted activities to children's different starting points and gave them demanding but achievable next steps. Practitioners questioned children carefully instead of supplying answers, so talk became a tool for thinking as well as expression.
Specific experiences bring the curriculum to life. During foodie Friday, children sampled Chinese pancakes and spring rolls, then discussed taste and texture. Chinese New Year work included listening to and repeating Chinese phrases from a book. Mathematics was equally concrete: children matched objects, read numerals, balanced scales with bears and worked out missing numbers.
The programme also included planned visits from farms, dentists and princesses. Parents were invited to contribute resources and information about festivals important to their families. These encounters and contributions give children subjects to talk about and connect new vocabulary with people, objects and experiences beyond a book.
Relationships are a major strength. Children were highly motivated and enthusiastic about learning, but expectations were not confined to adult-led tasks. They listened to friends, supported one another and showed pride in small responsibilities. That combination makes independence social: a child learns to manage their own behaviour while noticing the needs of the group. The January 2025 inspection found a highly effective key-person system, secure attachments and respectful friendships. Children listened closely in groups, raised their hands, tidied resources and took pride in being the daily helper. Those routines build confidence as well as consideration for others.
Small-group language sessions, storytelling and visual objects helped staff tailor support. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and children from disadvantaged backgrounds, made excellent progress from their starting points. Parents received frequent updates and ideas to continue learning at home. This two-way relationship has a curriculum purpose: families can reinforce current learning, while staff gain information that helps them understand each child's experience.
Leadership supports the quality of those interactions. Staff practice was observed, feedback was precise and leaders modelled effective techniques. Individual meetings and training gave practitioners a route to refine their work rather than relying on a fixed activity plan.
Safeguarding arrangements were effective in January 2025. The report described an open safeguarding culture centred on children's interests, while leaders observed practice, modelled effective work and gave staff precise feedback.
The setting operates from St Johns C of E Primary School on Maple Road, London SE20 8HU. It provides weekday sessional care during term time and closes for school holidays.
Children are accepted from 24 to 60 months. Capacity is 40 children in total. This describes the scale of the setting, not the number attending on a particular day.
Diddy Dinos Penge is best suited to families seeking term-time, weekday sessional care for a child aged two to four, especially those who value rich conversation, carefully taught early mathematics and strong key-person relationships. The Outstanding 2025 inspection is supported by unusually concrete examples of children thinking, speaking and helping one another. Families needing later-afternoon or holiday care should plan additional cover.
